Later this year D.T. will start broadcasting locals in hd. They are going to an mpeg format and guess what, Our hd tivos won't work with them (so Far)!!!! I called a rep and he said "ah.... you have the protection plan so I think you're ok" So I have been paying 5 bucks a month so I won't lose the ability to use this $1000 tivo I bought from them? What will I record on, another $1000 tivo?
Anyone have any good news about this?

knothead,

D* has been using an MPEG compression since the day they started, currently using Mpeg 1.1 (2) moving to Mpeg 4, this will allow them more room for more channels in the future.
As for your HD TIVO, D* will replace it with a new version of the HD DVR not nessasraly TIVO, but with many of the same features, they probably want to get out of paying TIVO, and built thier own.

The future looks very interesting as far as these DVR devices are concerned... They have a HD DVR as well as a Home Media Center on the horizon. :)
