Damn It!!!!!!! Firmware 3.15 broke my PS3

PFC5

I just tried to take a break from work and go online with MW2 and I was told I MUST update the PS3 firmware version. So I go and do this and everything does it's thing properly and reboots.

I then go into to play a game and play for about 2-3 minutes and the PS3 just shuts down and the red power light just keeps blinking. I then try unplugging it and then plug it back in and power up and load MW2. It tells me I didn't shut down correctly (no kidding) so I try loading MW2 again and just start playing again and bang it does it again.

So because they FORCED me to update it I now have junk for a console. :banghead:

Anyone know how to possibly fix this? I want to keep the launch console as I like the backward compatibility and we use this all the time. Any suggestions?

I think I remember you saying that you are a devout Catholic a couple years ago in some obscure thread. Maybe this is a sign from above since you are now entering tax season? I'm sorry to hear about your troubles though........

I still find it hilarious that you have found love in gaming as I know only one other public accountant who likes video games. Even then, he only seems to enjoy racing games like the GT series on the PS.

PFC5

I don't like the racing games much because they seem to be designed for lefties with the controls.

If you've been keeping up to date on other FW updates, you should have this option.

Try this...

While the PS3 is off, press and hold the Power Button until it beeps twice.

1. Hold The power button down; The system will turn on and turn off once again.

2. Once the System has been shutdown, re-press you finger until you hear 2 consecutive beeps

3. When you hear the 2 beeps take finger off power button.

4. You will be promted to plug in your controller via usb and then hit the PS button

5. The Recovery menu will pop up.

Hopefully this will help fix it. Try this before calling Sony.

I don't know if it helps prevent these things, but I always update my PS3 with a USB drive.

^ This is what you should try. Take the rebuild the database option, and if that doesn't clear it up try loading the 3.15 firmware on a USB stick and see if you can't relfash the firmware through the recovery menu.

I have been too lazy to use the USB drive update method but I agree that is the smartest way to do updates so I am going to start using that method. I have never had a glitch with any PS3 update but I haven't updated to 3.15 yet and will wait for PFC5 to get his fixed before I proceed.

If it makes you feel any more comfortable I've been running 3.15 since it came out (was optional then) and I've been playing on my ps3 constantly: games, music, and movies and netflix, etc etc.

I've also posted the link somewhere here in the gaming section to the firmware, can't remember the thread title though :o

EDIT: found it, here's the link to the thread: http://www.highdefforum.com/gaming-systems/104909-ps3-firmware-3-15-live-link.html

I tried this but it beeps 3 times not 2 times and just keeps going the a constantly blinking red light. I then have to press the power once to get a constant red light instead of blinking and I cannot get it to do what you are saying. My MW2 is also still in the drive and I cannot get this out either. I tried hitting the eject button but it powers off and goes back to the blinking red light too fast.

Anyone have the PS3 tech number?

Went to the website, and couldn't find it (they want you to do it online), so you'll have to check the back of your manual to find the phone number unless someone else can find it.

I got mine to do it accidentally. I just held the button down until something finally came up on screen (it was when I was forcing it do a new HDMI handhshake). Yours won't do that I'm guessing?

I get nothing on the screen.

I called Sony and they offered to fix it for free IF they decide it was bricked by the firmware update. Otherwise it is going to cost me $150.00 + 39.00 for S/H, and I go about 1 month without the console.

They said that I cannot take the MW2 disc out myself or else that would be modifying the unit and they will not fix it then. But I cannot get the disc out unless I pay for them to fix it. :banghead:

What do you guys think? Do you really think they will fix it for nothing as it must have been the update that somehow never completed because I had zero issues with this until they forced the update. What you you all do?

I need to call them back after deciding.

Did they walk you through any troubleshooting at all?

I'm honestly surprised they're even saying they'll fix it free if it was due to the FW. It's in their EULA that they're not responsible for bricking your console as the result of an update. (which is just stupid  )

Wasn't your PS3 one of the first ones that came with the backwards compatibility and all that good stuff that is gone on these cheaper units? If you have them fix it and they decide it wasn't the firmware update, do they warranty the entire unit?

Having them fix it is probably a safer bet, and it would still be more functional and cheaper than going out and buying a new unit. That is what I would do if I was in your situation. You still have a BDP for watching movies anyway, although you will be going through withdrawal for a while.

He said they were a multi-million $ company ( I corrected it was Billion not million $ company :D) and this cost is nothing to them and they wouldn't do that.

My problem with buying a new one and destroying the old one to get the MW2 disc out is I lose backward compatibility. I also lose USB ports that are needed for Rock Band instruments. How many USB ports are on the slim? Because I need FOUR for all instruments to be playable at once or else the new game that cost $100+ is no good either.

How many USB are on the slim? Anyone have a quick answer to this so i don't have to go searching?

Thanks to everyone for their input on what I should do. I am afraid if I get it fixed it could break down again and I will be back where i started again.

Damn that sucks to hear that your PS3 crapped out. I'm nervous about updating now! I already lost one a while back and don't really feel like paying another $160 to get this one replaced. Worst case scenario you could always opt to buy one off of eBay if Sony won't replace your 60GB with another 60GB version.

Yeah but then who knows if I end up buying a previous YLOD unit that somebody reflowed to last a couple of months. ;)

Anyone have a Sony repair center unit die again?

One thing that I wonder is if having the MW2 disc in the drive when I did the 3.15 update caused this or contributed to it happening. I remember that some updates done on the HD DVD players caused this when a disc was in it that stopped the re-boot for a 2nd phase of update to complete it caused those players to get bricked.

At this point when I get it repaired or replaced, I will ALWAYS make sure that there is no disc in it and I advise everyone else to do the same thing. ;)

Well after having to sign up and give this site all the info that used to be somewhat personal to me, i can now respond and note that i had the same thing happen to me today. I was amongst the few that bought my PS3 for 465USD before tax and i couldnt have explained what happend any better than you just did. It seems to cancel out the stock fan cause i dont hear it running anymore after the 3.15 firmware install. i was playing Socom for about an hour and then took a break, came back and it told me there was a update "NEEDED" no options. so i let it do its thing for 45mins or so and then it flashed up and i was loading the game and my console turned it self off on its own and continues to do it all day long while i try to find a new way to keep the heatsink cool. I bought that shitty ass 4 fan Intercooler from Nyko for 40 bucks and its no help, its still heating up way faster. so i have a house fan on the front and the intercooler on the back and it will run for longer than without the fans but still lags out bad then shuts off. I've always hated these damn updates as it has no benifits for me in any way. I dont care if my avatar is cool and newer and i dont care if my pictures can now be viewed on a different angle. i miss grabbing a huge cartridge, shoving it into my twotone grey console and not have to worry about any company developing software that will deliberately fuc% with my gaming just to bump up their financial standings a point or two. good luck, im going to take up reading seeing as im about done with reading all these poor kids stories about how their 500 dollar consoles are garbage after 2 years of use.. I've seen TurboGrafix16 (old ass disc based console) running now a days and thats like 20 years old.... I'm sick of seeing this strategic corperate bullsht being pulled on kids cause thats where the money is to be made.

So explain why companies like Microsoft have rogue programmers design harmfull software to directly and negatively impact its hardware. Microsoft created an assload of jobs to the people who have to fix them and the parts Microsoft sells to repair them. Im talking about viruses if anyone hasnt clued in. Now if Bill Gates becomes a billionaire overnight with making his product vulnerable to outside influences, why wouldnt Sony... do they sound like they have a friendlier name than Microsoft? If this cost is nothing to sony, why is it that they charge 160USD to replace a fan or re flash the hard drive... Cause they are out to get theirs just like every one else in this world.

I hope that same manager answers my phone call tomorrow morning. If they gave me an answer like that id have his job, because in my mind, my ps3 is worth more than that dick heads paycheck. In america, the problem is where they make their money, thats why the solution always costs either an arm or a leg.

I have a friend who is a VP of marketing for Sony Movies and he told me that the gaming department gives them NOTHING. That if he even thinks of asking for something for his son he's immediately told to shove it. So if they don't play nice with their own company what chance do we have?

This being said, I took a 3 year BB warranty on my PS3 so I'm guaranteed it will never break. LOL The Xbox on the other hand I was cheap and so I guess it will break sometime in the next 3 months.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Sorry to hear, my buddy had his bricked by the LAST update (the one that a few tried to create a class action suit over). He went out and bought a Slim, not sure if he sent in his 60gb for repair. Just talked to a co-worker that had his 60gb tank, he got it fixed (eventually), can't remember the exact issue with his.

The real question is, if they don't fix it for free, will you pay to have it fixed or buy a new unit (maybe they are learning from the MS business model)?:D

I have (just this week), co-worker had his 60gb tank, sent it in for free repair and they sent it back and it still didn't work, had to redo the entire process. He claims that it was the same console, so maybe they don't do what MS does and send out a replacement refurb unit.

Personally I'd send it in to Sony and have it replaced, then again I don't care for backwards compatibility and I have a powered 4 port USB hub so... <shrugs>

BTW Sony has some thing going now if you turn in a b/c model you can pay $120 and get a slim instead.

Other things you could try:
Reseating the HDD (not likely to do much but hey worth a try right.)
The freezer trick: Pop it in a freezer for two hours or so and then turn it on really quick while frantically pushing the eject button and perhaps get your disk out.

Other than that I'm at a loss.

I tried the freezer trick before I even read of trying it anywhere when I found that the YLOD is said to be due to heat. Didn't work either. :crying:

Now I am leaning towards buying a slim and just trying to get the MW2 disc out of the 60 gigger since any repaired unit will only have a 90 day warranty. I am thinking I want to get an extended warranty this time around as they are no doubt (to me) making these newer ones cheaper also.

So now I think I will have to find a ways to get the disc out AND find a cheap USB hub since the slim only has 2 USB ports.

The USB hubs aren't expensive. I purchased one about a year ago but haven't ever connected it since I haven't ever needed more than 2 USB ports wtih my 40GB PS3 but I thought I would need more for some reason. I can't remember much about the hub, price or make, other than I know I wouldn't have purchased it if it had cost much but I did see it the other day when I was looking for something else.

Buying a slim at $300 and fixing your 60GB, hopefully at Sony's expense but even at $150 if necessary is the way I would go. I don't have the solution to get the disc out of your PS3 though which is a stumbling block for you.

But fixing the 60GB model will only have a 90 day warranty. That concerns me.

Has anyone heard about the repaired 60 GB models breaking again after Sony fixes them?

I had bought a spare 6 Axis controller that I will not need with a new unit already having one and I still have not opened that Sony BDP360 player that I got for $118.00 so I am thinking about returning both to get about $170.00 towards the new PS3 slim cost.

At this point I really didn't need that BDP360 but it was a bargain at 118.00 so I grabbed it. So if I do get the 60GB fixed I will add it to the only HDTV that doesn't have a BD player instead of using the Sony player. That should cover half the cost.

I just do not trust Sony to admit it was the firmware update that caused the unit to fail despite it being the obvious cause since it was working fine right up until I was forced to do the update.

Holding eject for 10 seconds is what they recommend.

Personally, I'd sell it "as is" on ebay. That will cover the cost of a slim alone.

Those 60GB launch units fetch a high price in any condition.

I have been looking at You tube videos etc on how to get my MW2 out of it without voiding getting repair service done if I chose to go that root. I went out and bought a 120GB slim model today but I cannot get the MW2 disc out of the other to play. Nothing seems to work to get it out and I even tried putting it in the freezer for 1/2 hour thinking since the YLOD is usually heat related, but that didn't work either.

People are actually buying the original launch 60GB PS3 for more than $300.00 broken as is? I may have to look into that, but I would want the $60.00 for the MW2 disc if they didn't want me to break the warranty seal before sending it.

I cannot even remember my password to get into the PSN so I guess i will have to reset it after it does the update on the slim.

Thanks for any help you guys can find to get the disc out without breaking that warranty seal. It is appreciated or else i could be playing COD4 again for a month.

I wonder what hardware my 60gb has that even if broken people will pay big bucks to get their hands on it. I had my Socom Confrontation disc in when i experienced the same problem as you after the 3.15 FW, PFC5.

when it goes into safe mode and shuts off you can touch the on button and the red light will go from blinking to solid standby mode, i was worried about it getting stuck aswell so i just hit the eject while it was in standby and it came out.

I still have my reciept stating that i paid 465USD before taxes so when some of these people in this thread say, "buy a slim and fix your 60gb", thats 500 originaly, 160 to fix the 60gb and then 299 for the new slim. God sony has it made if the majority of its consumers follows these peoples quidelines. You just finished paying a little over 1100 US for a god damn console that is forcably updated once every "3 months or so" whether you're satisfied with its current functions or not.

The 60gb models have the highest failure rate from what I've seen, yeah it's anecdotal evidence but that's how it seems to me.

PFC5: Like I said earlier Sony has a trade in where if you have a busted b/c model you can pay $120 instead of $150 and get a slim. Seeing as how new slims are odds are you'll get a new one (and yes if you attach a note that your game is in it you should get your game returned to you as well)

As to the USB thing: You get really cheap hubs, hit up dealzextreme and you can find powered USB hubs for about $5. Their shipping is freaking slow but they're cheap.

I bought a slim today. Not sure if I should exchange the 60GB for another slim for $120.00 but you think this will get me a new slim one for that price? I may end up doing that instead of having them fix my 60GB model for $150.00. How much does a PS2 cost? We have a very old PS2 that I guess could be used for PS2 games. The new slim is so much quieter than the launch 60GB model.

I ended up paying $12.88 for a 4 port USB hub at Walmart so that we could play Rock Band as we need 4 USB hubs and the slim only has 2.

I just tried playing COD4 and what a weird experience after MW2. Knifing is much different and seeing only 10 or 20 points for killing someone was a shock. I did end up with a positive k/d ratio on the 2 games I played despite being on the losing team in DOM and only having 2 bars for connection speed.

I've got a launch 60GB PS3. It prompted me to do the 3.15 yesterday. I did it via the internet. No problem. I played a DVD after that last night. This morning when I turned on the system, it did a hard reset and loaded just fine and has been working fine all day.(playing music off of the hard drive) I haven't had any issues with my system from day one (bought it Dec 2006). Knock on wood!

PFC5, you'll want to send your 60GB in. For $150, its totally worth it to have Sony replace it with another 60GB system. Plus, they might even fix it at no cost, but I wouldn't count on it. The launch systems are tanks compared to the slim. I'm not saying they don't fry, but they are of higher quality than the slim.

Oh yeah, you could pay $150 to get the 60GB PS3 fixed and turn around and sell it for $500-$600 easy, so even if you don't want it, you should get it fixed.

I'm not positive, but I would think that they wouldn't have many refurbed slims yet to replace older b/c systems so my money is on it being a new system.

That's actually a pretty good idea. I don't agree on the older b/c systems being built better though, too many more pieces in them=more stuff that can go wrong.

If you don't have a need for PS2 compat or SACD, you might as well cash in on the 60GB.

The original 60GB models are very desirable purely because of the PS2 hardware based backwards compatibility. People are very happy to shell out for them.

If you don't want PS2 and SACD playback, it's well worth trading up!

Oh yeah. Its the HARDWARE based PS2 emulator and the SACD functionality. Its got "the guts" that the slim doesn't have, and its out of production, which means its not something you can just buy in a store. This means you can fetch Big Bucks for it. It almost makes me think I should cash in on mine, but I'll just wait for mine to crash and pay the $150. Then I'll sell it and maybe buy a slim or a 3D Blu-ray palyer as I've got other rigs to play SACD's and I don't play PS2 games at all. Time will tell. I'm really hoping that it doesn't crash or YLOD on me because I really enjoy it. Its been the best electronic gadget I've ever owned.

What method is that with a paper clip? I never heard of that with slot based drives. please tell me how to try this ASAP as this will effect the decision I have to make Monday.

I just got off the phone with 800-345-sony after explaining the very same issues as PCF5 and for us canadians its 230.00 to have them repair or replace. No free fix, but a turn around rate of 2 weeks or less as it only goes to Ontario!! not bad who cares and yeah, im putting my May 2007 60g AO1 version on Ebay.

I think the high price paid for the old AO1's are because you can use them as a multi tasking super computer, they have 9 processors and offer the option to partition a part of your HDD to run multiple operating systems on it. Even windowsXP if you find a way to bump up the internal memory. Once you have an OS like Linux, you can DL all kinds of emulators and play games from Nintendo up to PC games all with this little console. The slims dont offer that and pretty sure the 20 and 80 didnt either, and where the eph are the memory slots on the slim? thats how i stored all my movies on my PS3.

I just turned on my PS3...Saturday? I was told to updare to 3.15, did it as usual via the WiFi option. Rebooted, navigated the store, downloaded a few movies of stuff, turned it back off.

No issues. I guess now I'll try running a game and seeing if it runs ok.

You guys are making sure to keep dust clear of the vents right? Not sure why the PS3 likes to clog its exhausts with dust (least mine does.) I cleaned it yesterday after a long time of no use and boy was it bad.

Maybe your PS3 was already on the way out PFC, and the firmware does something of a POST upon the reboot after installation. Found a bad connection on the GPU and boom, YLOD.

Dunno.

Anyway, I did this update last night very carefully. I even verified the data after I downloaded it and after I transferred it to a USB stick.

Just a small hint to you guys that are going to dust your ps3's: Make sure you clean the vents on the bottom left of the damn thing (under the HDD) Those vents are the actual intake vents for the cooling system, NOT the ones on the front.

Yeah the vents in the front are exhausts, and if they get clogged, they'll cause warm air to recirculate inside.

Them ports are freaking tiny too, so clean em good.

Until I opened a ps3 up I didn't realize that the top and bottom half of the ps3 are actually sealed separately. Those little vents on the bottom are the only way for fresh air to come in and actually go *through* the HSF.

PCF5 did you actually see a yellow light, or just all red lights?

Had my ps3 60G since June 07 and no problems so far except one. I had the red light 3 beeps and shutoff, about 1.5 years ago. I guess it was an overheating issue? That was the one and only time.

Also I will add my ps3 fan for the last few months has been steadily on medium, within minutes if not sooner, once it's turned on.

I use it about 10-15hrs a week since I got it, and it's been placed on a wire rack type stand since day one. Lately I have a box fan in front of it- not sure if that helps or not...

It looked like it went right to the red blinking light with 3 beeps but when I looked straight on at the light it does flash yellow for a split second. All vents are kept clean and it still happened when I updated to 3.15 once they forced it.

How did you get it to go back on once you got the blinking red light? I have been looking on the net for a solution but none have worked. I have not taken it apart to try the reflow as this is considered a mod by Sony so they will not fix it then.

Thats my question too, if BCUS had the same overheating, how did it correct itself?

I have the May07 60gb and it wont do shit all. I have a 6" ducting fan with 6" dryer ducting running into the HDD side of the playstation and i bought a Nyko Intercooler to pull it all through and out the back and it overheats within the first 15 seconds of it being on everytime no matter if theres snow on the ground or heatwaves in the air. At first it appeared to have helped as the console would stay on a bit longer, rather than without the fans.

All in all it still craps out. when it boots up now its saying that the hard disk is corrupt and then trys to rebuild it but never gets past 13% completion

Sony will fix it even if you open it up and break the warranty sticker as long as you don't physically screw anything up, and they will definitely charge you if you do that.

Things that could go wrong: Bad contact between heatsinks and cpu/gpu, board could need reflowing, could be an unplugged cable or bad connection <shrugs> On a sidenote the reflow trick only seems to work temporarily in most cases. If you do open it and reflow the board make sure you sell it off quickly while it's still working.

My fan comes on and I feel the air coming out the back when i put my hand there for a whole 3 seconds until it shuts off again. So my fan IS working but yet I still get the YLOD on mine.

Not absolutely true. Sony *may* decide to not fix it if the insides have been tampered with or there is obvious damage done. The only thing that 100% sure is that if you break that seal and Sony decides to fix it you *will* get charged.

That said you already have a new slim, either ebay the 60gb to recoup what you can or pay Sony $120 to trade you for another new slim.

I didn't do anything to fix the red light flashing and beeps when it shutoff. I believe I simply turned it back on and it was fine. That's what makes me think it was just an isolated overheating issue, and not my thermal paste deteriorating (I think?).

But as I mentioned my fan has been on medium the last few months within minutes of powering up, so only the lord knows if it's on it's way out :)
