Cinemax for $0.01 a Year No Longer Valid

18 months ago I heard about the Cinemax promotion where you get it for $0.01 a year if you sign up for auto pay.

The catch was, you could only do it for 6 months (who does that make sense to?).

So I canceled after the initial 6 months. I was told that I could do the promotion again another 6 months down the road.

Six months later I called Dish, and they told me I was eligible for the promotion again, but this time it would be permanent. That's right. They said that so long as I'm a loyal Dish customer and continue to pay via auto pay, the Cinemax for $0.01 a year promotion would be permanent. That was 5 months ago.

Last night I received a letter from Dish informing me that the promotion was ending and starting next month, I would have to pay $12.99 a month to continue receiving Cinemax.

Obviously I was pissed.

I called the Loyalty Department (because the regular CSR's typically don't know crap, and the Loyalty people are authorized to give you just about anything you want). The lady in the Loyalty Dept. confirmed that the promotion was ending. She said there was nothing she could do about it.

After a mild amount of bitching on my part, she did offer me every Cinemax, HBO, Showtime, and Starz channel for free for 3 months. She also told me to check back after those 3 months to see if they have any new promotions at that time.

This is not the first time Dish has made me promises, only to take them back months later. but at least I got every movie channel free for 3 months, and I certainly intend to call back in March to see what else I can get.

For those of you currently receiving Cinemax on the 1 cent promotion, be warned. If you don't call to cancel, you'll be paying for it soon.

Ya ever heard of a "promo"? That's what you had the first time around. But now you perpetually expect it? have you ever heard the term "welfare mom"? Pardon me for breaking the news but that's exactly what you be doing,,,expecting a free ride at the expense of others. Instead of whining about the freebie you got,,how about being grateful for what they gave you.

Dude, why are you being an ass? They told me it was permanent and then took it back. It no longer qualifies as a "promo" when they tell you it's permanent. How does that make me a whiner?

All I expected is exactly what they told me they would give me.

Welfare mom? Screw you!

Expecting a free ride at the expense of others? That just doesn't make one bit of sense in this circumstance. Who was this at the expense of?

Seriously dude, you're retarded.

I've had the Cinemax for a penny for about 18 months, still do. But I'll keep an eye out.

I just lost my cinemax for a penny also. I am going to give them a call and do a little bitching, as I was also told that as long as I kept the auto bill pay, the deal would be good. I will cancel auto bill pay, in case they do another deal for signing up with it.

back the train up junior and read your original post. How many time's do you use the word "promotion"? And once the promo ended,,you were pissed because you now have to pay for the service. Since it most certainly cost's dish more than $.01 per year to offer you Cinemax, they have to make up the loss someplace else. Don't get me wrong, me be the first to knock the satco's and cableco's for their pricing and promo schemes and recognize them for what they are, Marketing 101, The Hook.

It seem like a promotion of "Cinemax for $0.01 a year" should last a YEAR, not 6 months-- not 18 months, just a YEAR

Paperless billing and auto pay save Dish a lot of money. If they expect us to do it then they should give us somethng in return. My October bill had as a thank you for using auto pay and paperless billing my cinamax for a penny was being extended 1 year. My previous statements said the same thing. My Nov and Dec bills do not have this. So I assume I will get it until October 2010. I will be keeping an eye out though !

I just have to mention again that a "promotion" no longer qualifies as a promotion once they tell you it's permanent. THAT is my issue.

NEVER heard anywhere that the Cinemax for $0.01 was permanent, expected just the opposite, perhaps you misunderstood.

Do you have it in writing?

When I first set up to get HD, they tried to sell this to me and I told them I wasn't interested at the time. I asked how long this offer was going on, and they said it was permanent....Also, the platinum is not free if you have the gold HD. When I called about that as well, I understood that I was only getting HBO and Showtime free for 3 months, but thought that since I was subscribing to the Gold HD, platinum was free for as long as I had gold. No dice. It was as long as the HBO was. I called and complained that the prior representative told me wrong, and she did give it to me free for 6 more months. Better than nothing I guess, but still somewhat angry. Ended up dropping the Showtime and keeping the HBO for a monthly payment.

Not in writing, just what the associate told me. And I certainly did not misunderstand. I clarified this repeatedly with the CSR to be sure.

What I've learned is that if an associate tells you something, ask them to write it in your profile. That way there's no confusion when you speak to the next person and they try to take your "promotions" away.

I got the same thing on my September & October bills. I was going to drop it, but so long as the promo is still active, I'll keep it.

I'm still getting MAX channels as of now, but nothing was showing on my recent bill as a separate charge for them. Only my normal premium subscriptions which is only SHO/HBO.

Hmmm.... there is a Loyalty Dept? I had paperless billing and autopay like forever and never got anything for it. I just signed up for Cinemax for a penny when I recently switched to HD programming. I must of just got it in time.

It would seem Dish has as many different ways of running the same promotions as there are subscribers.
Some may be explained by 'new' subscribers, others (fewer most likely) by loyal subscribers.

When I signed up, it was a penny for one year, renewable for a second year. I received the notice that I was losing it, with no option to renew, at the end of the year. Guess I need to call the loyalty department. I am assuming that no contract extension is required for the 3 month free offer.

Dish will be glad to renew it for the regular price.

I have gotten several fliers in the mail and adverts in news paper still showing cm for a penny for new customers. If and when I loose it I will stop paperless and auto pay. I t is all a convenience for dish not me.

After looking at my account 'break-down' I am still getting the 1c deal. For how long is anybody's guess.

As a side note:
I looked into an AT&T UVerse bundle, to replace my Dish and Comcast (internet and digital phone bundle) services. After many calculations it might save me a few bucks a month, but with a less capable DVR and 6MB downloads vs. 12MB I have now.
Now with Dish proposing higher rates, I will revisit it a couple of months down the road, but I suspect all providers will have hikes.
If it ain't broke don't fix it, I guess.
What I did like about Uverse is how their programming packages are setup. Much less confusing than DN IMO. Have no idea how the performance rates, but as I said, the DVR does not quite make it, although the menus looks pretty good.

I got a letter in the mail stateting the pro was over and I would be billed $12.99 on my next moths statement. I chatted online and they could do nothing. So when my promo ends april 10 I will stop paperless billing and Auto Pay. I'm sure it costs them more to send a bill in the mail than they have to pay for cinamax. They could charge $1 a year and still keep god customer relations. OH well it was fun for the 2 years I had it.

I guess from their point of view, going from .01 a year to nothing is no big deal. The 'house' wins.
