upgrade optoma hd71 to hd8200

12-08-2009, 10:29 PM
I have had a Hd71 projector for just over a year and I am really happy with how bright it is in my well lit living room on my 100" screen. Now I see Optoma sells a very affordable 1080p hd8200 but it is not as bright. Do any of you guys think the upgrade is worth it if I watch a lot of blue-ray movies?

I do think that 1080p is a worthwhile upgrade for use with Blu-ray but your concern about ambient light is valid. I believe the HD8200 would be better in a light controlled room but I am not sure about your specific room, a brighter projector might be the better choice, even if it is 720p. It would be nice if you could see the HD8200 in person, switch on a light and see how it looks. I have a light controlled room but have decided to live with 720p for years although I do continually research 1080p projectors, I never get comfortable any of the budget 1080p projectors will work well in my home theater.

There is also the consideration of what to do with your HD71, I don't think it is worth much on the used market.
