A year ago i tried hooking up different hard drives to my 622 and none seemed to work consistently. I would lose all my recording or it would not find the drive after a day.

I thought i would give it another shot thinking they may have updated the software. I purchased a 500 gb seagate expansion drive. it is powered by one usb port no aux power. I understand that the drive is really a sata drive with a usb adapter from reviewer who took one apart.

it took two tries to get the usb drive formatted but it does work and works better than the previous drives i tried.

My question is do other people have usb powered drives on there 622? Should i have any concerns? I realize that aux powered drives were recommended.

You WILL have problems with a USB powered drive. If you look at the requirements for an external drive on the Dish website, it does require, not recommend a powered external drive.

thought i would update my experience with the seagate expansion drive. As far as play back it is just great. my only problem has been i need to unplug the usb connection and plug back in if i havnt used it after the screen goes into standby mode, which was one of the problems i had with the other hard drives i tried. If i dont do this the screen shows that no shows have been transferred.

since the playback and the file transfers have been flawless i am very happy. Plus no aux power needed.

Seagate has a fix for this drive going into "sleep" mode. Go to the Seagate website to download the fix and instructions on how to use it.
