New Super Mario Bros. Wii ... Game of the Year

Picked this up this morning cause I'm a sucker for Italian plumbers.

Anyways, it's absolutely great. Incredibly old school and yet so much fun at the same time. I wouldn't say it's as good as Super Mario 3 for the NES, but certainly as good as Super Mario World for the SNES. The only thing weighing it down is some gimmicky motion controls.

Other than that it's a definite possibility for game of the eyar. Had MW2 not come out this year it would have totally taken the top prize. Nice to see there's some competition regardless though.

Haven't gotten a chance to play multiplayer as my girlfriend is working all day, but reviews are saying it's a blast so I'm stoked to try it out.

If you have a Wii this is a must buy, especially if you at all enjoy platformers or Mario. :D

Get out of this thread! Mario > ALL! :D

Can't wait to get this. Everything suggests it's even better than NSMB on the DS not out here just yet though :( might get it on pay day... got Xmas presents to think about though. From what I've heard, it's definitely GOTY material.

Definitely must buy! I can't wait to throw my girlfriend off a cliff or better into some lava!!!

I picked it up and it is awesome. I think the level design is a little bit ahead of the DS game, but not quite up to SM3 or SMW, and, like just about everything 'non-wii sports', the motion controls are lame and ultra-gimmicky, but the game is amazingly fun so far.

Shame about the motion controls, what does it actually make you do using the remote rather than buttons?

Have you not played a Mario game? :p :D

I never understand how anyone can outright declare a game of the year overall personally. Comparing Mario to Uncharted 2 is just an impossible feat IMO. Uncharted 2 offers so much that Mario doesn't but IMO that also works vice versa (talking in general here).

I don't think it's possible to correctly compare games across different genres. They do different jobs. Modern Warfare, Borderlands and Halo ODST are pretty easy to compare, and it's easy to choose a preferred title. They do a similar job, but differently.

Comparing a beat em up to an action game to a racing game for example, I just don't see how they can be compared. It's really more down to an individuals preference in genre IMO as to which would be the better title.

Platformers are dead man! Even R&C2 is a shooter now! :p (I'm just screwing around, don't report me...please!)

Anyways, I'm getting this game TODAY! Watching the reviews give me that true nostalgic feeling that I hope lives longer than Punch Out did.

Any word if we can use the classic controller? I'm not a big fan of the Wii-mote on its side.

MikeRox

Doubt it, it has motion controls built in such as wobbling platforms or something like that. You'll have to get a plastic attachment to make it feel more like a control pad :p

Platform games are indeed dead it would seem. I can't think of any "true" platform games this gen other than Klonoa (PS1 remake) NSMB Wii (which you could argue is a NES remake with bells and whistles :p) and Little Big Planet, least not that are any cop. Is A Boy and his Blob a platformer? Or is that a puzzle? Or does one of the jelly beans let you shoot making it TEH SHOOTER!!!!111 :D

Daft thing is, you look at the sales of NSMB DS (just shy of 20 million) and LBP (not so spectacular, but still over 2.5m) and it's clear there is a huge audience for this sort of game. Hopefully the Wii ver will be a similar success and prompt a whole bunch of "me too"s, just like Mario 64 did leading us up to the excellent Rayman 2.

No. :( It was the first thing I tried. The game uses motion control (shaking) to pick stuff up and to launch yourself when your helicopter Mario. It's kinda lame, I'd have rather just used a button with the classic controller.

Other than that though the game is pure gold. I thought it was fun just playing single player, but last night me and a couple buddies payed 3 player for about 3 hours. Best time I've had in a multiplayer game since Smash bros. :D

Seriously it's just so much freaking fun. Make sure you play this game with other people!

Do you not count 3D platformers like Mario Galaxy?

Do you not count 3D platformers like Mario Galaxy?

Doh, knew I missed one! Pure 3D platformers are a dying breed though. Yes I do count Galaxy, loved every minute of that, had a huge grin all the way through... cept when I had a scary pissed off face at some of the later gravity levels

I don't count Ratchet and Clank etc though (and no it's not just becasue they have guns making them shooters :p) they don't have the same focus on the platforming. A true platformer for me, is one where the movement mechanics feel so right, that it is just a joy progressing through the levels.

Jak and Daxter from Naughty Dog was probably last gens stand out one for me. I have to say I did quite enjoy the PSP Jak and Daxter demo.

SOB! Game was sold out at the Best Buy near the parking garage. I was going to surprise the GF at dinner with it, but no dice.

I'm going to try again at the GS near my house (I hate that GS haha.)

I saw the commercial for it on TV, man I wanna play that game haha.

Wow this thread fell to page 2 already?

Seriously, all Wii owners MUST BUY THIS GAME.

This game alone has revitalized my love for consoles. Play with a good buddy (this game is meh alone.) I think I've put 6 hours into this game already with my girlfriend.

All the laughs, the "WTF" moments, the "alright we did it" moments, it is just a must own for anyone with a Wii.

Ahhh, it brings me back to being a kid. I'm yanking the controller around (as if to make Mario jump higher) but this time its to use the propeller. Haha what a nice way to give it added nostalgia.

I'm not sure if it has online, didn't bother to check.

Eitherway, dude get some friends! Does all your gaming require a digital voice and picture? Sheesh. Haha.

I don't even think I could enjoy this game as much if my girlfriend wasn't next to me laughing in my ear as I fell off cliffs.

Says the man who plays WoW and is the head of his ummm guild or whatever it is... I have plenty of RL friends, but my friends who game think the Wii is crap and the few people I do know with a Wii dont live in AZ :(

Not even my little nephews and brother play thier Wii anymore, but hopefully this game changes that for the time being..

Trust me guy, this is the kind of game you want to play with physical friends.

It reaps of nostalgia, and having a friend there to laugh and joke with you is what makes it complete.

I think that is another reason I don't like LBP as much. Controls aside, playing online with people is boring, but when my friends are over we play the shit out of it. Haha.

I totally get what your saying, I miss the old days of the N64 and Super Nintendo, but most of my friends dont live close and the ones that do just arent into gaming... Online is essential for me and without online gaming, I would miss out on a lot with some of my friends...

I have been bashing the hell out of my dust magnet Wii a lot lately but this game is to me its first real hit. Loving this game, a lot harder than old mario's and fun to play with everyone. Wifey and kids love it to and finally a reason for the Wii to be sitting there.

I've got up to World 5-1 so far and am loving this. I'm not gonna give you a list of games, but seriously, have a look at some of the other 2009 releases as I'm sure you'll find reasons to keep that layer of dust getting too thick after you've finished with Mario :)

SMB Wii is absolutely the Game of the Year, and the most fun I've had in years. Punch-Out Wii was also good, but no replay value kills it.

well no online play but its a blast. the best way to play is with one other player. some of the levels almost require it. playing with 4 is insane but a total party. this is a must for any Wii owner. I says buy it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd never do such a thing as long as they were good games (I even up-starred some games on the 360 I can't play because they're good games)

In all seriousness though SMBWii is the Ninty game of the year from my limited experience with the Wii. Instant Nostalgia, and very well done. Now if only they would get the Wii running in 1080p like that dolphin Wii emulator, there's already a couple of videos of SMBWii running at 1080p and 16xAA at 60 FPS on that emulator floating about.

Go back and play all the old Mario games on VC and NSMB DS and come back here and tell me NSMB Wii deserves a GOTY thread. Is it the best Wii game of 2009? Yes. You're totally right, the nostalgia put a smile on my face as soon as I started playing. A 2D Mario game in 2009 is very cool imo. I love that Nintendo is going back to their roots with the Wii with a 2D Mario and Metroid (all Metroid games should be 2D imo).

OK, just looked up the dolphin emulator and I'm so happy it's Mac compatible. I would kill to play NSMBWii @ 1080p/60 w/ 16xAA. When I get my new LED iMac, I'm going to buy a controller and play the hell out of it. Can you confirm that the game actually exists in that form or have you only seen vids?

I've only seen vids of it running, but I'm going to assume that Nintendo didn't just give out an .iso of the game (http://www.torrentreactor.net/torrents/3601560/New-SUPER-MARIO-BROS-Wii-PAL-EMPEREUR-TEAM-COM) for hackers to run. I personally have no experience with the Dolphin emulator so I can't be of much help there, so good luck.

OT: I really hope she isn't licking that controller in your avatar haha.

Everytime I see it, I just think of how dirty that controller must be, and her licking it...ewwww.

If it is suppose to be erotic, it completely misses its mark on me haha. Working in a hospital and "hand hygiene" drilled in to us, I'd never think of letting my girl lick my controller to be sensual. haha.

I think it's supposed to be erotic, but it's not for me either. I've never been one to think women licking various objects as being sexy.

However, I chose it because I absolutely love the 360 controller. So ergonomic!

I feel like it was a good picture to convey that love. :angel

P.S. I totally agree with you on how dirty that controller must be... I hate it when my controllers get dirty. I'd say I wipe them down with a clorox wipe at least once a week.

Finally got to try it with three other players.

Wow, how quickly we went from team work to cut throat. Haha. It got to the point where running for a mushroom, you'd get a shell in the back or worse, picked up and thrown off a cliff.

Haha, in the end probably the most fun I've had playing a console game in a long long time.

Funny how it doesn't take intense graphic, or waggle mechanics, to make a damn good game.

I'd agree, Wii GOTY!!!

I was playing 4 player last night as well. The game just adds an entirely new dynamic when your not only battling the enemies but also your "friends". Last night in 8-1 my friend just decided to pick me up and hurl me into the lava... his reason? I was standing too close to him.

Ah, dude I love 8-1. Such a simple little design. Add that the game has no sense of clipping, and you can sort of push each other out of way during jumps just makes it even more hilarious.

ah, I miss gaming with the guys...I need to make more time for them.
