Direc tv told me that I can get a hd dvr for $99. Was hoping for a free one but I will take that. Anyway I want to get one for my son for christmas to go along with his new lcd hd tv that he will also be gettin for xmas. Can I get this hd dvr and not activate it? Thanks

I could be wrong, but I seem to remember that you need to activate it withing 30 days. Hopefully someone else can confirm/deny for you.

Yeppers, you are correct because it is a leased unit. The $99 was an upfront lease fee.

If you activate it, it's only $5 per month. That would be a total of $10 by December and if you wait close to the 30 days before you acvtivate it would only be $5.

But don't you have to activate it with a plan as well? So wouldn't it be more that the $5 a month because of the HD service and the DVR service along with whatever plan you choose?

That I don't know but if the son has Directv, couldn't it be activated on his account?

Does your Son Sitll live at home? the only way you can activate it is to connect it to a system, within 30 days of purchase.

Just activate it and let him have it and save the TV for Christmas. It'll work on a regular tv too. My dad has an hd dvr in his bed room hooked up to a standard def tv.
