Question about formats

I am a new member. I have been here several times and have learned alot from reading.

After much research, and due to budget restrictions, i have decided that my first HDTV will be either a Panasonic CT-30WX15 or a Philips 30PW9110D. They both seem to have a decent picture and the price is right.

I understand what the different formats mean. The Philips will display 480i, 480p, 720p, and1080i. The Panasonic will only display 480i, 480p, and1080i (not 720p). I prefer the Panasonic over the Philips for all reasons except that it will not display 720p.

My question is this. Will the Panasonic not display 720p channels at all, or will it convert them to 480i or 480p?

Thank you for your help

I think you will find that both of those sets (and most direct view CRTs) will convert any signal that comes in to 1080i. So channels using 720p, such as ABC and ESPN, will be converted by the tv.

Altrnatively, if you have an HD STB it should be set to output the native resolution of the tv, ie 1080i.

Neither will DISPLAY a 720p signal, they CAN'T. Only the Philips seems to accept the signal for conversion. Both only display 1080i/540p.

Format conversion is often done by the TUNER, which is set to output the TV's native res.
