My take: (the breakdown)

Lost in the shuffle of movies in the mid 90s The Quick and the Dead iss a western that possesses a slightly different story than we are used to seeing. Despite the story being rather far fetched it still manages to work and entertain the viewer. The story follows the story and revenge of a woman named Ellen or 'The Lady' as everyone else calls her. When she finds the man that murdered her father many years ago running a small town somewhere near the Mexican border she decides to find a way to kill him. When Herod decides to initiate a gun fighting contest she enters with the sole intent on killing him. However, there are 15 other contestants besides herself and she has to fight her way through some of them to get to Herod. Helping her along the way is a preacher named Cort and the town doctor, who is a long time family friend. I say this is worth a rental for most and a purchase for fans.

Since the DVD was rather grainy I didn't expect much from this release, but it still manages to fair well on Blu-ray. Colors receive a nice boost and flesh tones seem to be more accurate than the DVD. Fine detail is also much better both during the closeups and wide shots. The grain seemed to be the main issue with this transfer. It seemed to be inconsistent from one scene to the next. Now, whether this was because of DNR or master used for the movie it is rather obvious. It does take away from the transfer, but on the whole it is a significant upgrade over the DVD as it should be.

We receive a 5.1 Dolby TrueHD that is rather pleasing the ears for the most part. Dialogue is clear and understandable during the entire run time. Your sub and surrounds will both get a fair amount of work during the gun fights and during the final 20 minutes of the movie. I was amazed at how the surrounds were used for clamoring crowds and what not, but the directionality seemed to be slightly off at times.

The only feature we get is a new feature from Sony called Movie IQ, which is literally as pointless as BD Live. Since I mainly use a 1.1 player for my reviews it doesn't really matter to me since I would have probably ignored it had I used my PS3 anyway. To make matters worse there's not any other features at all, even a trailer.

Movie: 7/10
VQ: 7.5/10
AQ: 8/10
Supplements: .5/10
Final word: A Purchase For Fans

As always thanks for reading folks.

Good movie. Thanks for the review.

You are very welcome. If they had included some decent extras I would have labeled it as A Must Own.

A good movie in any case. I just can't find enough westerns anymore...

I wonder why Open Range, Outlaw Josie Wells, and several John Wayne movies have not made it to Blu-ray yet.

This is a good movie IMO, that did not make the radar in theaters as I never remember even hearing about it back when it came out, but have seen it several times on cable.

I may be buying this is i can get it for a decent price.

Thanks for the review.
