hey guys,

My cottage is wired for regular DirecTV..meaning it has the old dish style from a few years ago. I recently installed a plasma tv and hooked up my DirecTV HD box and got all the regular channels but none of the HD counter parts except the HD channels on 70-79. Someone told me i needed a new dish so i ordered a slimline off of ebay. Do i need to install the whole dish or can i just replace the LNB and leave the old dish? I'd like to find out before doing this by trial and error.

EDIT, sorry for misspelling the title, i tried to edit it but it won't let me.

Call them (DTV) tell them you want an upgrade to new 5lnb dish w/new hd receiver,DO NOT PAY for it!! They have given me all I ever needed w/o any $$ to secure me as a customer. Look at the new promo's free instal, free hd dvr, free 5 months prog. if new cust. get that free, what about us!! ( current customers). go get it dude!!!

If you WANT TO buy your own slimline 3LNB, or slimline 5LNB dish you can get buy one frome dealers on EBAY for about $75. The $75 pays for shipping and hanindling and get's you the dish, mounting bracket, and 2 support arms. You don't HAVE TO get it from DIRECTV.

It's not FOOLISHNESS !!! Some people like to do projects like this on their own.
Some people don't like to take a day off work waiting for someone to come over and do a quick&dirty free install job when they can and want to install the equipment themselves.

If you call and ask for a HD upgrade, You may get much more than just the Dish install for free, You can get offers for programing and HDVR as well for Free.

Don't short change yourself by not asking D* about it.

I got the slimeline dish brand new for $40 with the all the support brackets and everything...new in box. DirecTV handles all my equipment at home but for my cottage i would rather do it on my own time since its three hours away. I can't make appointments and hope they come on a day i will be up there. I will happily pay $40 for the dish and lnb and swap out the old dish on my own time. I don't need to remount it, just loosen and slide the old one off and put the new one on and fine tune align it.

I just wanted to know because someone said i might be able to just slide the old LNB out of the old dish and put the new LNB from the slimline on and that will get the HD programming. Then someone told me i need to change out the entire dish. The slimline is quite a bit wider than the old standard one so i am figuring they made it wider for a reason. Thanks guys!

The slimline dish uses a different size mounting post. You have to install the new mounting for it. You can't just take the old dish off the old mounting and slide the slimline dish on the old mounting.

OK, good to hear. I'll be installing it this weekend. Thankfully the dish is pretty easy to get to and the roof is easy to work on. thanks guys.
