Usually, no 2 year contract means no leased equipment and buying the equipment. Thus the hefty up front fee. You can still lease without the commitment, but you have to pay an activation fee up front as well (this fee is waived with the commitment). Deals are available in all cases, it is a matter of what current deal is available when you sign up for the service. New customers always get better deals than those offered to current or returning customers. No matter what type of customer you are, your first bill is for two months, Dish is like most cable companies in that you pay before your service instead of what you already used.
