So you have a late intro coupled with a required large engine which in 1961 wasn't the norm. Performance cars didn't really take hold until the following model year - a reaction to the new NHRA Super Stock class.

The engine lineup for the 1961 SS was the 348 CI in 305, 340 and 350 HP and the brand new 360 HP 409.
