Don't worry about it, they are designed to take the outside weather, I've had one in an outside window for 15 years and it's still in fine shape.

But remember the cheaper the unit the less is spent on protection, as they want you to go buy a new one every 5 years or so.

Add a little down tilt to the outside will keep the water from coming inside.

And blocking those vents may cause it to malfunction sooner then expected.
