Many players no longer have a composite (yellow) output nowadays so the component outputs (red, green, and blue) need to be used. You probably connected one of these to a yellow input on your TV which resulted in a B&W picture. If your player doesn't have a yellow output, you'll have to use the red, green, and blue outputs and connect them to the corresponding inputs on your TV. Audio will have to be connected separately as ImRizzo mentioned (red and white - not to be confused with the red component video output).
