Unless you are spending big $$ the upconversion from your AVR will most likely be no better (possibly worse) than your tv. High quality scalers (used for 480 upconversion) add significant cost. My AVR (receiver) when purchased had one of the best scalers in it and was MSRP at ~$2000 (maybe a bit more). Now there are a lot of other pricey thingsin there as well but tv's are made to scale video so that is one area a budget AVR will not really improve upon.
