I was having same problems with my 606 and PlayStaion for the las 3 months. Finally I was able to fix it for under $10 ... :-)
I don't know a diode from a capacitor, but I used the parts list, ordered from Digi-Key and had the parts in three days for $7.27 (including ($2.22) postage - there was no "handling" fee.
Took me all of an hour to remove the board, wiggle the old capacitors off, replace them and then add the four additional bridges (?) to the black thingys.
I no longer have to wait a half hour or more for my PS3 to be recognized and the OnScreenDisplay is back too.
