Wait a second... the Verizon tech told you what? While I don't doubt that the 890 would do the job, you can get other products for alot less money. For example, even though I don't know much about this device, it looks like it may do the job for you:

Really what you need is an RF remote. Your old DirecTV remote supported that functionality (I understand you could get an RF adapter kit for your remote). Unfortunately the Verizon remote does not. However, there are after-market kits that will do the same job.

Hi JPL, I was checking this out, can you please tell me your thoughts? I have a Harmony remote.

Thank You

Looks to be pretty promising - but note that it only works with a couple models of Harmony (the 890 and the 1000, IIRC). Yeah, it's the same basic concept as the IR repeater that I provided the link for. But since it's made for use with the Harmony, it's going to be totally compatible with your remote.

I still can't believe the Verizon tech told the one poster that she HAD to get the Harmony 890 to do what she wanted to do. That kind of nonsense really does frost me.

Hiya JPL, I decided to go another way with the extender, I just bought this one on Amazon, and it does work with my Harmony 550. I just want to thank you again for your help, it's what makes this place rawk! The members that are here to help us newbie's, and in turn us newbie's can help others.

I don't know WTH was going on with the Verizon tech telling a customer that, but when you're new to this whole HD thang, some peeps try to take an advantage of you. That's why sites like this are so important. all my computer knowledge I learned was from sites like this. Maybe the tech was stating his biased opinion because he has a 890, and he was told he could only use it with the ir repeater.

No problem - btw, just to clarify, I don't have an issue with a tech not knowing the answer to a question. Or even to hedge: 'I know the Harmony 890 will do the job for you, but there may be some other solution out there...' something like that. But when they speak authoritatively about something like that... that's when I have a problem. Like the time, a few years ago, when I heard one sales rep at Radio Shack tell a customer that DirecTV and Dish are really the same company. I caught their attention when I laughed out loud at that one.

The ONE nit I had with my FiOS TV installer was when he told me that the QIP-2500 (SD box) didn't take S-Video. I asked how he installed the box - whether he used coax only (RF) or if he hooked up with S-video. When he told me that the box didn't accept S-video, I gave him that 'come on... do you really think I'm that stupid?' look. I said 'um... are you sure about that? Because the documentation on your own website clearly shows that the box supports RF, composite, and s-video...' Then he backpeddled and said 'well, they DO accept it... but the RF modulator on these devices is really good - you don't need it.' That was a better answer.

JPL,
A hedge, indeed, but I think he's wrong.....one cable with RGB & audio on it vs 2 cables separating audio & video vs 5 cables separating audio[left & right channels]& video[separating RED, GREEN & BLUE].

PS I don't think ITALIAN926 would have said it THAT way???
