Default STB screensaver

Has anyone noticed that Verizon recently implemented a screen-saver message?

The message (which reads something like "STB box is in stand-by mode, to enable, press menu") appears when the STB box is off but the tv is on. I actually enjoy this feature as my wife is usually guilty of forgetting to turn the tv off.

Yes, this was added with v 1.6.2 of their s/w, which is currently rolling out. I like this feature too. I think it was done as a work-around to a common issue - there are times when the TV goes on but the STB doesn't turn on - something that I hit yesterday. It's nice not having to get up to turn on the STB by hand when this happens.

Has anyone noticed the channel information not changing with the picture when scrolling channels quickly on an HD box? This is driving me nutz.. this also came along with the update.

Yeah, this is a known bug with the new s/w. I was able to reproduce it on my 6416, but I had to surf pretty darn quickly for it to show up (faster than 1 channel/second). Someone also indicated that this can happen on the 2500 (SD STB), but I've never been able to produce it there.

Yep and it is frustrating.

I also notice that if I switch from Ch 17 to Ch 16 on an SD STD, the info for Ch 17 is still displayed. If I exit to clear it and wait a few seconds it pops back up on it's own. If I exit again, it still comes back and sits there on the screen without timing out and turning off. If I go back to 17 then again to 16 it finally resets to the correct channel. (It doesn't seem to do this with any other pair of channels or on my HD DVR). Now *that's* really frustrating.

yeah, I did noticed that there was a lag when switching channels.

don't they test for this nonsense before rolling them out, or are they simply relying on their techies to actually do a good job?

I have noticed on the 2500 more than with the 6416, but only when I am changing the channels via the box not the remote. The last time it happened it really through me for a loop as channel info was way off and I couldn't tell what channel I was on and had to grab the remote and type in the channel I wanted.

The Motorola STBs, at least the 6416 but I think all of them, have an interesting quirk - they draw the same amount of power whether in standby or on. So there is really no power saving or heat reduction in standby, and probably no benefit to ever put it in that mode.

So, I never turn mine "off" - just let it run all the time.
When I want to watch some television, I just turn on the TV.
When I'm done, I turn off the TV.

That's exactly what I do, no need to touch the STB.
