Default 1080 vs 720

Just upgraded my Tv to 1080 - is there anything on the cable box from Verizon that needs to be changed to support the difference?

You can change the HD resolution put out by the box. I would try both 1080i and 720p to see which works best on your TV. Also, you can change what's known as the 4:3 (or SD) override. This affects how SD feeds are sent to your TV as well. Basically it's an override for the HD settings. So if I set my SD override to 'off' the set top box will upconvert the SD programming to whatever HD resolution I have set on my STB before sending it to the TV.

I tried to change the box setting but when I pushed the menu button (with the Tv on and the box off) nothing happened. I have a DVR box hooked up to the TV with an HDMI cable. Would that have any thing to do with it?

You don't have to do that anymore - you don't have to go into the DVR's firmware. Verizon has since baked these settings into their s/w. Turn on your TV and your DVR, and then hit menu. Go under Settings. I'm working from memory here, but I think from there you want to look for Video Settings. There should be options for both HD resolution and SD override.

you need to "tell" the box that it is now connected to a 1080 display. Call verizon and they will tell you what you need to do.

Please read the posts ahead of yours. Others have already answered the question. A call to Verizon is not necessary. Thanks.
