during that stretch, there was no change in service. I had the same channel lineup & same analog signal.
sure comcast rolled out newer services, but I didn't subscribe to them, plus they were extra. I have no problem paying for a service that I use, or even increasing the pay so long as their is an improvement (and so long as those improvements/enhancements are not replacing a problem).

I'm not saying that Comcast's pricing is totally justified in this case. Their increasing prices 4 times in 1 year is what caused me to move to DirecTV. However, during that time they did improve their network. Were you therefore paying for that improvement even though you yourself didn't use those services? Yep. That happens. Probably not fair, but it's a way for these companies to spread the costs of these upgrades.
One other thing to consider - if they make those types of upgrades, it's in their interest to get you to migrate to those new services. There are several ways to do that - one of which is to make it increasingly expensive to stay in the tier you were in. I'm not saying that it's right, but they were clearly trying to get you to move up to digital. One way to do that is to make it increasingly expensive to stay where you are. It's one of the reasons I'm not a big fan of pricing tiers. Yeah, they allow customers to get a lower level of service to save money. But when there's an incentive to get you to move up, they can apply pressure to do that. Besides, isn't that more of a reason to love FiOS, as the one poster stated? Doesn't FiOS, as well as services like DirecTV and Dish, provide a counter-weight to that through competition? Yeah, they do. Here in the Philly market (not sure where you're from) the DBS penetration is actually really low. It's some 40% below what would be expected in a market like this. One very likely reason is the stranglehold that Comcast had on CSN Philly over the DBS providers. Since Verizon rolled into this area, the change has been breathtaking. I know this is purely anectdotal, but of all the people I know (family, friends, co-workers, neighbors) the number 1 TV service provider is now Verizon. My wife and I are looking to upgrade our house. We're looking to stay in this area, and have seen ALOT of houses recently. I make a note of who the seller uses for TV service. Again, by a long shot, the winner is FiOS. Yeah, it's anectdotal, but the point is that Verizon is clearly taking a big bite out of Comcast. What's the result? I get weekly fliers from Comcast promising discounts that are just unreal - if I switch. I'd rather go back to a B&W tv with rabbit ears than to go back to Comcast, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't tempted. Why are they offering those discounts? I think the answer can be summed up in one word: FiOS. |

agreed. I too, have noticed a dramatic migration of comcast users to FIOS. most people switched due to dislike of comcast (or one of their aspects). however, many of those that did switch to FIOS, experienced similar problems with FIOS.
