Hat tip to someone on dslreports, here are some dates for the first stage of HD roll-out beyond the first two markets (Ft Wayne, IN an Portland, OR - btw, Ft. Wayne is still set for 6/30, but I understand Portland got pushed out a couple weeks - it's now 7/21):

7/23 NY
7/28 Pittsburgh
7/30 Richmond VA
7/31 Norfolk VA
8/4 Northern NJ
8/20 Massachusetts
8/25 Philadelphia
9/17 Maryland
10/2 Florida
10/8 Texas
10/9 California

Where these dates come from - I have no earthly idea. It also looks like Verizon updated some of the channels to be rolled out in this first round. A couple channels that were there have been temporarily pulled - they'll likely be coming in a roll-out later this year.

Thanks JPL. Do you know if South Jersey changes mimic changes in Philly?

I was in one of the first communities in the country to get FIOS ..YET I have to wait the longest to get the latest rollout. What a load. Verizon once again screws the early adopters. Who do they think they are.....APPLE ......LOL

I wonder if these rollouts are based on the analog to digital conversion...getting rid of the analog channels frees up the QAMs for HD channels...or if this is based on QAM expansion.

Both, actually. They're in the process of doing both at the same time. Eliminating analogs frees up space to create new QAM channels (eliminate 40 analog slots and replace with 40 QAM channels). But they're also expanding out their network at the same time. I don't remember the exact numbers, but in some older markets, they had 40 analogs and 53 QAMs (newer markets were built with no analogs, and more QAMs - not sure how many). What they're doing is:

a) converting those 40 analog slots to QAMs - so just doing this, they would have 93 QAMs in thoseolder markets.

b) Expanding out the number of QAMs to get up to 135 - this is basically the max you can have with a 870MHz QAM system. Each QAM is 6MHz wide, and there's some room between as a buffer.

When all is said and done with this expansion, every market will be 100% digital, and all will have 135 QAMs. I BELIEVE they're doing both a and b at the same time (only makes sense that they would) - meaning, as they hit a market to eliminate the anlogs, they're at the same time, going in and upgrading their equipment to handle all 135 QAMs.
