Default Help! Can I hook sony dvd vx500 to my verizon fios dvr

Wondering if there is any way of connecting my Sony vx500 dvd recorder to my verizon fios dvr to save some favorite shows. I have been struggling with it for a while and am ready to give up. I am somewhat electronically inclined but just can not figure out this problem.Any suggestions?

Sure; just connect the S-video output from the DVR to the S-video input of the vx500 (plus RCA audio of course).
That's all there is to it.

That is what I thought too but there is no S video input just an output on the DVD recorder. There is the basic yellow, white red input on the recorder but there is no extra output on the dvr. There is a HDMI on the dvr but not on the recorder. Not looking good is it?

If the DVDR does not have S-video input, they you will have to use the composite (yellow). However this won't give you very good quality.

You may want to consider a new DVDR ($120-$150) with S-video input.

I'm pretty sure you can find a S-video to RCA (yellow plug) adapter, and use that to plug into the input

Nope!

Two totally different signal types; that's why S-video is better.

Composite (the yellow plug) contains all of the video information on one cable; S-video carries the chroma and luma components on two separate wires; you can't just put them together with a simple adapter.

. . . it is very simple to convert S-Video to composite signal (just the logical merging of the two through a filter capacitor is required), many electronics retailers offer converter adaptors for signal conversion. No conversion will improve image quality, but will allow connecting to otherwise-incompatible devices. Converting composite signal to S-Video is a little harder, because once Luminance and Colour are merged it is hard to take them apart without loss.

How do you then record from the dvr? Do you have to play the shows on the fios dvr and record real time i.e watch the show while you are recording it?
