Either verizon is runned by dumb and dumberer or they have some suprises. With all the hype with hd channels and every company making an effort to add more hd channels why would they announce games. Also they new for a long time that DTV was going to be adding more hd. If comcast found ways to add more hd with there limited bandwidth why can't verizon? Even if they don't have the bandwidth they claim they have to at least have as much as comcast. Why wouldn't they just add 1 to 5 channels just to make us happy? Are they that clueless! I tend to think they have something up there sleeves!

I've had comcast for 20yrs and to put up with there bull year after year then finally switching over to fios I said to myself I hope they crash and burn. But, you know what, over the past year I got over the fact that they used the same crappy boxes as comcast and I got over the fact that they raised rates on tv and internet,But the one thing that pisses me off the most is the closed mouth policy they have now. All I'm asking is some info on there future plans. If they said you'll have 10 hd channels and a new guide by the end of the year that would be fine.but to only hear rumors of possible hd channels by some time in 2008 is pathetic. Yeah fios tv has only been up for 2 years, but how long has verizon been around as a company?? the people that think there isn't something seriously wrong with the way there handling things are probably the ones that bought into voom, laserdisc and are jumping on the blueray/hd bandwagon.

I totally agree with you. Verizon must be run by a bunch of morons. Or else they would have either added the damn channels or at least tell us when they're gonna get released!! If they don't announce something regarding HD soon, I can easily see people jumping ship and switching to providers that do have the HD channels!

I posted this in another thread but this is the latest official word:
Verizon's new telco FiOS service said flatly that it will not add TBS HD for the playoffs, according to its statement. "We're a new system and adding channels all the time, but unfortunately won't have TBS HD for the baseball playoffs," Verizon spokesman Phil Santoro said in an e-mail to the Globe. "But we expect to continue adding dozens of new channels including HD channels in the coming months." |

Maybe verizon is using this 6 month dry spell to upgrade there VHO's and CO's and then will have 30 more hd channels overnight..........or maybe not.

This is starting to be a trend with verizon. I could see if they were passing up on these channels for History or science, etc......but to see the list of companies all adding these channels around the same time and verizon is just sitting back is pissing me off.

Aside from TBS HD, what are other providers adding that Verizon isn't?
I still think Verizon has quite a few more channels than I had with Comcast.

Here's my take on what's happening with Verizon. Yes, I agree... it's frustrating watching all these other systems get all these channels. One quick note about that - yes, I'd love to have things like SciFi HD, or History HD, but realize something - and I've stated this before. For most of those channels the content is seriously lagging behind the channels. For now most of them are mainly broadcasting SD stretch-o-vision. By the time Verizon gets these channels, the content will be more HD.
Now, what's Verizon doing, and what's the holdup? They've said that they'll add a couple more channels this year - a couple HD and a couple SD. From what I understand, A&E HD will be the next HD channel they add, and they are supposed to add Fox Business Network (I'm guessing in SD). Beyond that, they're not adding anything until into 2008, and the reason has to do with bandwidth. But, you ask, what about all that lovely fiber? It's wonderful, alright, but there's an issue. Currently FiOS TV is fed via QAM, and is uncompressed. That lack of compression ensures the best PQ, but it comes at a cost - they can't cram in all the channels that other systems can. I'm fine with that. For all the new HD that DirecTV is adding, e.g., their SD is still on the same satellite that's bursting at the seems, and as a result those channels are over-compressed. Not so with FiOS. There are only so many QAM channels to go around - 135, from what I understand. Now, Verizon doesn't run on all 135 QAM channels - I think they run on 105 - 110. What does all this mean? It means that the TV bandwidth is currently limited by the same limitations that other cable companies have - the fiber gets fed down to coax and fed to your TVs via QAM. Because of all this, FiOS is currently hitting a bandwidth crunch. Note, I said 'currently'. What are they doing to add more bandwidth? Well, one thing they COULD do is free up those extra 25 - 30 QAM channels. That would add 50 - 60 HD channels. But that would require hardware updates that aren't exactly cheap. I believe they WILL add those QAM channels, but it won't happen immediately. What else can they do? They can do what they're currently in the process of doing - eliminate their analogs. They actually have slots for 50 analog channels. And those channels are simulcast in digital (if you have an STB, you get the digital feed). They are going to eliminate those analogs next year. They have an agreement with the FCC to get rid of them by feb 2009, but they're making moves to get rid of them sooner. When they do, they free up 50 QAM channels (for analog 1 channel = 1 QAM channel). When that happens they'll have enough room for either 500 (yes, 500) digital SD channels, or 100 HD channels. What are they doing beyond that? Well, they've already announced their plans for 3 years out. They're going full IPTV by 2010 - 2011. When THAT happens all that lovely fiber will really show its stuff. At that point they'll have more bandwidth than anyone else out there. All this means that some patience is required. I'm not all that tempted by what DirecTV offers, btw, because of what I heard about those new HD channels. I mentioned about the SD broadcasts. They're also creating a new HD tier, for all those channels without a corresponding SD channel - which means that you'll need to spend an extra $5/month to get things like HD Theater and the like. Plus I wouldn't get all the HD locals I do now, which would suck. As for comparisons with other cable outfits, I agree that there isn't much difference between say FiOS and Comcast right now in terms of HD offerings. The number of HD channels is about the same around here, but there are differences in specific channels (e.g. Comcast has a channel called Mojo HD, but FiOS has HD Net). And I understand that Comcast doesn't compress their HD either, putting it on par with FiOS. Where they fall behind, in my opinion, is on their SD channels. |
