500,000 subscribe to FiOS TV, 1 million to FiOS broadband, says company

More than 1 million households and businesses across the country now receive Verizon FiOS service, the company said last week.

The Rich and Marjorie Bayer family of Massapequa, NY, is the one millionth customer to receive a FiOS Internet installation since the service was launched in August 2004. The family of five also receives voice service and FiOS TV over Verizon’s network.

According to the company, about 500,000 customers now have Verizon’s FiOS TV service in their homes. FiOS TV was introduced in September 2005. Both the FiOS Internet and FiOS TV milestones were passed during the second quarter of this year.

Title could also probably be:

"500,000 leave comcast TV service and 1 million leave Comcast Broadband!"

They are going to take a big hit from Fios. This should be good as it should only benefit us consumers.

Comcast gave over the local system to Time Warner the week (Oh Hallowed be the Day!) I got the FiOS up and running. I canceled Comcast less than an hour after the VZ install tech left. Jeez - whatta rush--- But I digress...

Time Warner called the next Monday morning with a cheery "HI! I'm Cutesie from YOUR New Cable Company! I just had so much fun replying "Oh No, You're NOT!"

In one of my evening perambulations about my subdivision, I made an ad hoc survey of FiOS vs Cable vs Satellite. FiOS has been available here about 18 months. There are three homes with dishes AND FiOS (!). two homes with only dishes, two homes with only cable. One home with no discernable service at all. And every cotton picking other home in this subdivision has an ONT on the side of the house. That is over 300 homes, just in this subdivision alone.

Time Warner is bleeding from the eyes here. Ad campaigns, 'we want you back" phone calls and mailings, it is incredible.

Just to be a horse's ass, I called them and told them I had FiOS, that I was having trouble getting an outage resolved, that FiOS said it would be 6 days before they could come out and look at my system, after I had assured them the failure wasn't at the house (actually true), and I was thinking of going back to cable <choke>. T/W told me that if I gave them the OK, they would GUARANTEE me I would be hooked up with TV, Internet and Phone BEFORE NOON TOMORROW (Saturday), and I would get my first month free, and no install charges. "We want you back <sniff, sob>".

I of course immediately beat Verizon over the head with this, and when the VZ CSA said she doubted they would do that, I played her the tape. Somehow the failure at the central office was found and fixed and I had TV service back within the hour.

I guess CATV companies DO still have some use after all...
