Default STB Remote Control not working well FIOS

Does anyone have issues with the remote control that Fios provides? I cannot tell you how many times I have to change the angle of direction to get the STB to respond to my button pressing, or when FF through commercials and the HD DVR box does not respond to my repeated button pushes to stop FF.

I was thinking of getting one of the Harmony Universal Remotes, but did not want to get one if the issue was with the STB and not just the remote provided by FIOS.

Can anyone share their experiences if they are using Universal remotes with the FIOS Motorolla STB (both the HD DVR and the regular box).

That is the one issue that I really have had with FiOS. I agree, it does get annoying pushing the button and getting no response. But as far as I can tell, it really is just an aiming problem; when I sit up and am careful, it seems to work correctly every time.

One other comment: I have programmed my Sony remote for the Motorola box, and it seems to work much better when somewhat off target, which reinforces my view that it is really just the remote.

I have seen complaints from some people about the STB never responding, or the FF never stopping, but I have never experienced that. Also some folks miss the 30 second skip that I guess Tivo has, I have never had that so I don't miss it.

On one of the forums I have seen mention of a new remote being delivered to new customers, supposedly it is better. They also said that existing customers would eventually get the new remote. Don't know how true/untrue that might be, you might want to call the FiOS folks and ask.

As for me, I have had the remote for a year, so I guess I have pretty much gotten used to it and haven't pursued getting a Harmony, which I gather is probably the best one out there.

Sorry I can't be of more help, but if there is a new remote coming that is not so sensitive to aiming I would take it in a microsecond.

Justin-Thanks for the info. I have some friends who have the same issue with the remote as I do. I had a 61" Projection TV and had the boxes on top of the TV so I had sort of an upward angle. The TV blew and I bought a Plasma and now the boxes are below the TV (downward angle), but the problems persist.

You are right, if you find the perfect spot (mine is hanging my arm off the couch a few inches off the floor and aiming straight at the box) the remote works fine. I just want a little more forgiveness in the angle as my wife and I sit in different spots of the room.

I just do not want to spend a few hundred dollars on a Harmony to find out that issue exists with the actual box and not the remote.

I am going to call FIOS and see what they say about a newer remote.

Yeah, my box is below my LCD and it is awkward to aim it downward when I am comfortably reclined in the easy chair. But a big question: you let your wife touch the remote? blasphemy!

One thing I forgot to mention that you can try: turn the remote 90 degrees so the surface with the buttons is veritical instead or horizontal. Sounds strange I know, but the signal path from the remote just seems to provide a little more vertical latitude at the STB when turned that way. (I didn't make this one up. I saw this in one of the forums, tried it, and it really does seem to be a little better)

Default Try the Comcast Remote

I originally had Comcast and when my FiOS was installed I kept my Comcast remote. It works perfectly. I had to reprogram some of the buttons like the OnDemand and added the 30sec. skip, but other than that it is perfect. Not to mention it is much more comfortable in my hand because the buttons are bigger and more spread apart.

P.S. I have heard that Verizon is releasing a new remote soon, but being that we are at the end of the year and most big companies spend all their budget money on revenue producing projects right now, I don't expect to see it until later next year.

I had to call tech support to reboot my DVR and while talking to the tech I mentioned the really poor remotes. He said Verizon had a new version made by Phillips and that I should call the Customer Service.

I called today and they knew nothing about a new remote. The rep also said that if there was a new one, they would be issued to new customers.

I have a feeling they would be more than happy to send me new remotes if I told them I would switch back to the local cable company for my TV, Phone, and Internet.

Guess it is just a rummor, but I want new remotes. My Harmony is great, but I have 6 set top boxes!

Default The new Remotes have problems also

I have the new Phillips remote (five of them) and it will not "page up or down". It will not process "favorites". "All On is only a two device function.

I discovered on my own that the Comcast silver remotes do work perfectly with the STB 2500. So I agree with dkcooper about that. I also agree that the Comcast remote is easier to handle.

A recent conversation with Verizon FiOS revealed they are aware of the remote failings but they will not announce a fix for it yet.

My suggestion is to get a hold of some Comcast silver remotes and enjoy FiOS.

I received a letter from FIOS about 3 months ago stating that new remotes were becomming available and would be available to old customers soon. So I called CS a few weeks ago and a person there said he would ship me out new Phillips remotes and I could return the old ones to a local Verizon store with no cost to me. Weeks went by, no remotes. So I called CS again and they had no record of the call nor the offer to send new ones. And they said they can't send new ones for free, we have to buy them. And this was after they switched me from Tech Support back to CS about three times. Oh well, they are quickly morphing into a real cable company.

Default Remote control issues (possibly STB issue, not remote)

Most here seem to think it's likely the remote that has issues?

I'm not so convinced, I think it may also partly be the STB itself.

Why? I can flawlessly change the volume, channel, power on my Vizio TV, but channel changing is delayed, erratic, or inconsistent with the STB from Verizon... even after they did a "flash" of the firmware on my boxes.

So in short, it can control my TV no prob, but not the STB... Hmm, sounds like the remote is transmitting just fine, but the STB (particularly the DVR STB) has very finniky channel changing or response to the remote.

Two devices one responds fine, one doesn't, with the same remote...

Damn it Verizon, such an awesome service to be screwed by such a frustrating piece of equipment. Seriously, spend all that $ making a good fiber optic network, then skimp on the choice of STB / DVR.

THis is a known issue with plasma tvs interfering with the IR of the remote. call verizon and they will send you an IR extender that plugs into the STB. Move as far from the tv as you can
