I was wondering if there is a way to ff in big chunks rather than patiently waiting around for 8x to move forward on a recorded program. Directv provides for ff in 30-minute chunks, but to my knowledge, not fios. Thanks in advance for any help on this.

Well, if you have 1.9 of the IMG, you might try using the Chapters (Chaptering) function. While viewing the recording just press the Up Arrow key on the remote, then the Right or Left Arrow keys to move forward and backward in the program in "big chunks" (the size of the chunk depends on the length of the recording, the longer the recording the bigger the chunks).
One caveat: some areas of the country apparently have had problems with chaptering, but here in the DFW area (VHO 1) it seems to work very well. If you are still on 1.8 of the IMG, you are supposed to get 1.9 next week, you should then have Chaptering available. Edit 11/23: I gather that the distribution of 1.9 has been delayed from next week.

directv customer for 11 years, new to fios 2 weeks. I seem to like Fios but there are tradeoffs, however small!! When I try the chaptering I get blank boxes not available for the program..... again without sounding dopey, is chaptering available for some shows and not others. I also use to like the D info section where it would give the names of the cast and a little bio/and other shows they appeared on.

Yes, sometimes the chapter boxes say ""Thumbnail not available" or something like that. but the chaptering still works, at least for me. Use the right/left arrows to move the amount of time shown below the empty boxes, no worse than blindly skipping 30 minute chunks (actually much better to me). did you actually try to use the chaptering function even though the boxes didn't show a thumbnail?
As I said in my original response, some areas apparently have more trouble with getting chaptering to work than others. In my area it works most of the time, but yes, I just found a recording that should have the thumbnails that doesn't. But I can still skip through the program using the chapters based on the time interval shown. As to the cast info, etc, yes, that is an area where FiOS does fall a little short. When viewing a non-recorded program you can get at least some of that info, when it has been recorded only the overview is available. Some people I do know want to see more; for me it doesn't matter, I decided to record the program so I pretty much know who is in it, etc. But of course that is just me....

To be honest I don't know if it works, BUT I WILL try wen I get home...I thought since they were grey/blank this function wasn't working. What often happens when I begin to watch recorded programs with "one eye" open...,and miss a lot, It's cool to scan past chunks and slot back in...!!!

dave b, glad to hear it works for you. Chaptering does make it pretty easy to skip through a program, although it certainly is much better if the thumbnails are there....

On version 1.8 (on 7232 DVR Box) MENU>>>SETTINGS>>>DVR>>>SKIP gives you a choice of 10 seconds, 30 seconds, 1 minute, 5 minutes.
I use Forward Skip: 1 minute and Replay skip backward skip: 10 seconds to quickly zoom into where I want. The Next and Previous arrows control the skip. For your regular shows you quickly intuit that the first commercial needs 3 forward skips or so and you can do it in a second or two. |
