Default QIP-7232 Order

Well, after signing up to be notified when the 7232 became available for upgrade, I finally got 'the e-mail' last night. I placed the order with them. Not real happy about the $40 upgrade fee, but the way I look at it - if I didn't get something with a bigger harddrive, I was going to need an additional external drive. So, it was either spend $40 to get a 500GB harddrive DVR, or keep what I have and spend $100 to get a 1TB external drive. Since 500GB will be more than enough for what we need, and since I didn't relish the idea of having yet one more box sitting in my cabinet, I bit the bullet and placed the order. Hopefully it'll get here by the weekend.

I just hope you have better luck than me. I've had to have mine reset 3X now. They told me if it happens again I need to switch from HDMI to component because the firmware aren't playing nice. I actually switched HDMI cable brands. One of their suggestions was "Flip the cable around"... I was like "Tell ya what I'll just put a whole new freaking cable in"...

That HDMI switch the cable around suggestion actually worked for me once. I was stunned.

Happened again briefly tonight I'm either going to order a new box or just hook it up with component cables and see what happens.

I haven't gotten a email about upgrading yet. I wonder how long I have to wait or if its a regional type thing? Actually I just re-read the OP - where do you sign up to be notified about this box?

Default Same Here

I got the email at the same time as you JPL. I was looking into trying the verizon store route but they are just too far away for me to get to without really going out of my way. The price of gas out here in California would almost add up to 40 bucks anyway. I have had the same 6416 DVR since original install almost 6 years ago, and it really irks me that I should get dinged 40 bucks to upgrade to to a DVR that seems like it will pretty much be mandatory once the new IMG rolls (due to what you and others have stated about slowness issues with the 6 series boxes and the upcoming 1.9 IMG). I have had basically the MAX package with all movie channels this whole time so I know they are profitable on my account. I have made many recomendiations to neighbors around town as well; in other words I have been a very good customer, but I am starting to think that the high praise I have given them in the past is no longer warranted I guess it is still better than TWC which is the alternative in my area, but until the VALUE comes back into their service I can not whole heartedly reccomend them anymore.

Jopopsy----in order to get on the waiting list, just sign on to your Fios TV central account and click on the "MY TV" and under that click on "Set Top Boxes" and then over in the lower right side of the screen you will see a box that states something like "Want More From you DVR" ....Just click on that and you be asked for your info.

Good Luck.

Hope that IMG 1.9 Rolls soon.

Yeah, follow what faulknkid said about singing up for the e-mail notification. You should get one saying that you've been put on a list and you'll get a future notification when the DVR is available to you. When that second e-mail comes (the one I just got) there's a link on there that you follow to place the order. BTW, someone gave me that link before I got the e-mail... didn't work for me. I only started working when I actually got the e-mail. Some folks got the e-mail a month ago, which means that they're definitely doing this in stages. Probably to manage demand.

As for the upgrade fee, you can try calling and complaining. I've heard of more than one case where some compensation is made by doing that. Oh, and since they're now offering bundles for hardware (get discounts if you have x number of boxes) I'm hoping that this switch will activate the discount I should be receiving. Verizon never seems to automatically give you this stuff - you have to call. But since I'm upgrading my setup (swapping out one box for another), I believe that should trigger them giving me the discount without me having to call them about it. Sure, it's only $2/month based on my setup, but still...

It should. Not to give away any real details, but here's how the beta currently stands. We were given a build last week - this is the first we've gotten in probably 6 weeks. It was designed to fix the UI bugs that we flagged. There's a second build coming (hopefully next week) which is designed to fix the more functional bugs.

Since playing with the latest build, I can tell you a couple things. First, the wait from the last build was worth it. They fixed just about all the UI bugs that were on the list - including the ones that really ticked me off the most. They also made the colors less 'stark', if that makes sense. The saturation of the colors is definitely more pleasing now. I went over my in-laws not long ago and after playing with their setup (they're not in the beta) I came away with one conclusion - I used to prefer the old color palate... not anymore. It took me a while but the new color palate is lighter and I think easier to read. The old one looked dark and busy to me after having had 1.9 for a while. I didn't like the new palate at first... now I prefer it.

This last build made it even better. The colors, like I said, look nicer - more 'natural', with much better grading and saturation. Also, the flow between the menues used to look 'hacked'. I took that to be a reflection of the rough state of the s/w development. I was right - the flow is very smooth now.

A few bugs were added with this last build, but nothing that I would consider a show-stopper (all VERY minor, nit-picky type bugs, and all are probaby very easy to fix, in all honesty). If the next build we get is on par with the success of this last one, I believe 1.9 will definitely be ready for prime-time. It's a VERY nice release. In addition to the stuff in their press release about the s/w (HD guide, external storage, DVR to DVR recording sharing), there's lots of cool little features and new functionality tucked in there. Nothing I can disclose here, and with some of it, it seems a bit silly to get excited over, but even those silly little additions enhance the user experience. If the next build is as clean as this last one, it shouldn't be long before they start the roll-out (if I had to bet, I would say we should see the first roll-out starting in March).

I dont find it all that surprising Verizon charges $40 for a swap. UPS doesnt ship Verizon boxes for free, they obviously have to be insured, TWO WAYS, AND Im sure the boxes are pretty much taken out of circulation once received. We're talking about thousands upon thousands of people that want the new DVR's.

I'm in no rush to change my 7216 even though I have 4 7232's on my truck. lol. I dont save any recordings forever.

Well, THAT was fast. Ordered my box late Wednesday night, and it was waiting at my door on Friday when I got home from work. Set it right up and an hour later I was totally up and running (1.9 is currently on a 'slow spin' deployment to testers, and it takes a while for it to download). Love that harddrive size (had a recording on there, with the box registering as 0% full... gotta love it). I didn't even have to call Verizon to flip the HM DVR to the new one. It just worked right away (I could tell just by looking at the DVR - one feature of 1.9 is the DVR to DVR sharing, and the menu even on the DVR makes that fact obvious - but I tested it anyway, just to be sure).

BTW, I have to disagree with you on this, Italian. Verizon does refurbish old boxes - the 7216 I'm replacing was the one I got back in December when I swapped out my 6416 (wanted to see the full HD guide and I wasn't sure how long it would be before the 7232 was available, so I did 2 swaps in as many months), and when I got the 7216 it was clearly refurbished - there were signs of wear on the box - it was clear that I had someone else's old box.

As for the cost of shipping and all... yeah, that's an issue. But they're going to start charging that $40 fee even if you pick up the box in the store. Besides, I think that the shipping/storage fees for the boxes have to be factored into the rental fees of the boxes. I mean, if I upgrade to ANY other box (including the 7100 P2, which is the new stand-alone box), I don't get hit with that charge. I think the upgrade fee reflects the fact that the box is more expensive to produce, currently. You're paying extra right up front to accomodate for that, I believe.

I was somewhat reluctant to upgrade again, and our family does the watch-and-delete thing generally, but I still run out of space. For starters, my wife likes to watch movies repeatedly - she'll record an HD movie, set it as 'save until I delete' and it'll suck up space on our DVR indefinitely. Then there's the fact that I have 5 kids, each of whom have their favorite series... and space fills up REAL fast.

Then there's one new feature in 1.9 such that it'll be real handy to have that extra space. No, um, specifics, but it rhymes with 'fundelete'. Once you delete a recording, it's recoverable as long as the deleted recording doesn't cause you to run out of space.

JPL, they've always charged for getting the 7232 at the store here in Long Beach, CA since they got them just after the first of the year. Those that have been able to "trade" boxes for free are lucky. I'm still waiting for my e-mail to get the box -- I received the initial notification that I'm on the "waiting" list on 2-8-2011. Anybody have an idea how long between getting the initial notification and then getting the e-mail and web link to order?

Mine is officially fried. The hard drive clearly is no good on it. or the ventilation, or the exhaust or something. I have it in a home theater rack, but there is 3" or more on every side of it. My 360 and PS3 have less room and are fine. My old DVR took up the same spot for 3 years.

I now get a message that the hard drive is over heating. Tomorrow at 9:30 a tech is bringing me a new one out. Guess I got an unlucky one.
