Default HD DVR in black?

Is it possible to get a Fios HD DVR in black? Or use a different DVR altogether? Or are we stuck with the white/silvery box they provide? I'd like to match my components. Thanks...

Ha! That is the first time in my entire life I've ever been accused of that. I wish.

No, it just seems silly that, what, 95% of audio and video components in the world are black, and for some reason cable operators tend to make their boxes silver.

So again -- is it possible to either a) get a black hd dvr that works with fios, or b) get any hd dvr other than the silvery one it looks like they'll be supplying to me?

Thanks!

There are only a couple of options. First, get a third-party DVR - TiVo or Moxi. If you do that, though, you lose VOD functionality. Second option - wait. Verizon is set to come out with a new series of STBs sometime early 2010, made by Cisco. I don't know if they'll be black, but they may be. Unfortunately all of the HD boxes that Verizon currently carries have that outdated look to them. Interestingly enough, the stand-alone SD STB looks nicer than the HD boxes do (and those are black).

Purchase one can of spray paint primer, and one can of flat black spray paint. Mask off the buttons and spray the rest with first the primer, then the flat black paint. It will look very nice, and everyone will be envious of your one of a kind black HD DVR box. People do this with their computer cases all the time. Just take your time and remember that several thin coats are better than one thick coat.

My Comcast DVR is, of course SILVER...but then so is my VCR, DVD and TV bezel. Mostly accidental serendipity.

Alas, the box that holds it all is a shiny piano black surface...oh well, that's what happens when someone tries to create the universe in 6 days.

Except that you don't actually OWN the Verizon DVR. Do that and you've just bought the box. To the OP, don't do this - the rate they charge for something like this would be MUCH higher than you would expect it to be. Probably on par with a non-return fee when you cancel and don't send the hardware back... which means they would likely charge you several hundred dollars for intentionally damaging their equipment. It would just be cheaper to go buy yourself a Moxi.
