Default TV Reccomendation

I am in the market for a Plasma or LCD tv that is 55" or larger and I want to make sure that I get something that works well with hdmi on a FIOS hd box. Can you guys let me know if you have any tv's fitting that description that you are happy with? I am looking to spend $2000 or less. I am also interested in 120HZ or higher.

Thanks in advance for you help.

Sincerely,

Randy Rousseau

You have 2 great plasma choices in a 1080p 58'' class with the Panasonic TC-P58S1 being my 1st choice. The Samsung PN58B550T2 58'' plasma would be a fairly close 2nd. Both are onsale at Best Buy for $1799.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Panasoni...asma&cp=1&lp=3

But you room enviroment would help you decide on what would be the best fit for your room. Other than your size req and $2,000 budget, please answer these questions from the HDF flat panel stickey thread.

1. How far away will you be from the display when watching it? (Be as exact as possible. A 5' range difference IS a major difference - Please limit the range to 2')

2. What TV will it be replacing (i.e. 27" tube TV, etc)

3. What will you be watching on it (i.e. 1/3 movies, 1/3 TV shows, 1/6 Sports, 1/6 gaming console, etc)

4. Will a computer be connected to use the display as a monitor? If so, what percent of the time?

5. Will you be getting a Blu-ray player to watch movies and will you be getting any HD service from cable/sat, or will you just be watching SD programming, and upscaling SD DVD player?

6. Are you looking for the best in class display, the best bargain display, or best bang for the buck in the middle display?

7. What is the room lighting situation? (i.e. can you control the lighting? Can you use light blocking blinds, etc to control it?)

8. What is your budget range?

9. Will people be watching at multiple viewing angles or just usually one person sitting directly in the center?

10. When will most viewing be done on the display (i.e. Daytime or after sunset)?

stay away from Sony

There's issue with Sony TV's and these Motorola Box's. I hope the rumor I hear about new box's in Q1 next year will solve the problem.

Thanks for the quick suggestions. This tv will replace a 27" crt downstairs in the living room. We have a Sony KDS50A2000 upstairs which is great, but it doesn't give the 3-d like view with depth perception with Blu-Rays like you see at Best Buy. The new tv will be downstairs and we will be about 12 feet away from it. I was told at Circuit City that we don't get the depth perception on the Sony because it is not 24 fps and 120 HZ. I want to make sure that whatever I get will fix this problem. The lighting can be somewhat controlled, but not completely dark.

I stand behind my BS comment, based on my experience and what I have read on my "numerous" sites that I have visited.

Yes, I have seen a few reports of people with Sony TVs experiencing some problems, but not many, and no where near as many as Samsungs, for example. I am sorry that you and your dad have had problems with your Sonys, but that does not necessarily mean that everybody is going to have trouble. For example, do both of you have the same model? Are they recent models, or 2-3 or more years old? Maybe the problem is related to a specific model. Is there a microcode update available for the model(s) you have? What model HD STBs do you have? if they are 7xxx boxes, they appear to have far more problems with different manufacturer's TVs than the earlier 6xxx STBs.

I may be generalizing too much, but I think you are also. Sony TVs most definitely will work very well with FiOS.

I second what Justin says........ I have multiple Sony's with absolutely no HDMI ssues. Old boxes and new boxes and it doesn't seem to matter. Sammy's seem to have more issues. I personally would buy a Sammy now and use some sort of work around to not have the HDMI issue. ie... use component cables. But that is just my humble opinion. I still would stay away from plasmas unless you have a bright room. Even the best still have some burn in issues.

I'm sorry but you can't call BS on something that does affect people. I have a Samsung and I have read online people having HDMI issues with their Verizon STB and the same TV I have. I have had a STB hooked up to my TV with HDMI for probably 6 months now and I have yet to have any HDMI issues *knock on wood*. It would be pretty arrogant of me to call BS on people saying they are having HDMI issues with their TV just because I have not experienced any issues.

So while you have not experienced issues and from what you have read, other's reporting online have not experienced issues does not mean there are a bunch of people that have. You have to remember that people that post on these types of sites tend to be a minority and are normally more interested in stuff relating to these topics than the majority of subscribers. I just think it is really arrogant for somebody to call BS when multiple brands of TVs are known to have HDMI handshake issues (and the TV manufacturer and Verizon both blame each other saying it's not their fault, talk to the other person. Of course, the latest firmware update Verizon was trying to release recently (1.7) was supposed to help alleviate a lot of HDMI handshake issues).

Samsungs are notorious for bad power supplies (as I am now finding). They use cheap capacitors which go bad after a year or two. Samsung says there's no problem, but just Google "samsung tv capacitor & power" and you'll see thousands of people are experiencing "no problem". Next TV will be a Vizio.

Problems when they rolled it out to the first 2 VHOs so they stopped and there hasn't been any word since.
