Default HDMI Cutting In & Out

Hey everyone. This is my first post on these forums. I just got an HDTV, but I've been an HD fan in general for a couple years now.

I have Verizon FiOS with the HD STB and it connects to my TV using HDMI. It cuts out every few minutes for about 2-3 seconds saying "No signal detected" and then comes back in. I have two HDMI ports and I've tried them both, but haven't fixed the issue entirely. Is it the STB that's acting up? Is there anything I can do? I really don't want to have to contact Verizon and go through their troubleshooting and wait on another replacement STB to get here.

It sounds like the HDMI HDCP handshake issue that so many are having problems with. The FIOS box needs a firmware update to correct this issue and until one is available for you, I would recommend connecting the box to your TV with component cables for video (red, green, blue) and either optical or analog (red, white wires) for audio. You will get just as good a HD picture with none of the cut out problems.

So Verizon doesn't have a firmware update yet to fix this? That's kind of lame, but I'm open to different connections. I'll try out component. Thanks.

Verizon's currently rolling out a new version of their s/w (v1.7). It's been rolled out to two markets so far, from what I can tell - TX and CA. It's supposed to help with this handshake issue.

Default Check Component As Well

You may be experiencing what I am. I am using the component output to my HDTV (so my DVD is on HDMI1 and helps my remote out) but several months ago I would notice that the video signal would go out for a second then come back. I thought my component1 port on my Vizio was going bad, so I switched my FIOS box to HDMI and it would do the same thing. Only on HDMI it would show snow for a second and I would loose audio.

Right now I just deal with it, but it gets on my nerves sometimes.

So it happens with component as well? Wow, Verizon needs to address this quickly.

For me it doesn't show snow when it cuts out. It shows green for a second then it cuts to all black saying "no signal detected." Then it comes back to normal.

I have never seen this happen using component connections, and I've been with FiOS for over two years.

Agreed. kbaker is probably experiencing to things. I would suggest that he try a different component input on his TV (if he has one) because it could very well be the component input on his TV that is going. Of course, the component output on the STB could also very well be dying, which would mean he just needs a new STB.

The newest firmware that JPL is talking about (1.7) is supposed to really help with the HDMI handshake issues according to people that already received it. Though it was put on hold since there were some other issues it caused, so Verizon is trying to fix those and then they will continue the rollout.

This is exactly the same problem I'm having. I'm just dealing with it. I'm not going to toss a service, which has been stellar up to this point, over what is essentially an annoyance.

I eagerly await the next firmware update and I'm giving VZ a little slack here since they are fairly new to the game with a brand-new technology.

You don't "go get it" The firmware is pushed out by VZ to the boxes automatically.

Could this have anything to do with the HDMI cable itself? I have been with FIOS for a couple of years at this point, and got my HDMI cables from a very reliable vendor, and have no issues. Where did you get your cables from?

The only place to get high quality, reliable HDMI cables at low, low prices is www.monorice.com. If you pay any more then they charge for their cables and wires then you are just wasting your money.

There is a typo in the website address above, it should be www.monoprice.com.
