Sony's big plans for OLED HDTVs may slip to next year

Hope you weren't too attached to the idea of "medium to large" sized OLED HDTVs coming from Sony this year, according to the Wall Street Journal's sources, the company's slipping share of TV sales mean profitability takes precedence over sweet, super slim new displays. Surprised by its inability to sell truckloads of $2,500 11-inch versions CEO Howard Stringer decided to put the project on the back burner, apparently more focused on things like competing in Wal-Mart and implementing cheaper LED technology for its LCDs. With LG also on a timetable that puts us a year or more away from seeing one of these on store shelves in decent sizes, things are up to Samsung to bring it home -- we're waiting.

No XEL-2 OLED-TV from Sony at IFA-2009?

Quote:
Sir Howard Stringer says in May 2008 the 27-inch OLED Television (XEL-2) is available in the next 12 months. Now a few weeks before the IFA-2009 in Berlin opens there are some tips that Sony does not introduce the XEL-2.

In an Interview for a few months Sir Howard Stringer says:
"We got great praise for OLED, but then you don't sell any. So then, all of a sudden, you have a different problem," said Mr. Stringer.

In April there was new rumors that Sony want to introduce the second generation from their Oled-Television device the XEL-2 at the IFA-2009 in Berlin.

But Sony does have some problem with the TV division which lost 127 billion yen ($1.34 billion) last fiscal year, representing more than half of the company's operating losses for the year, which ended March 31. Televisions accounted for 16.5% of Sony's 7.73 trillion yen in revenue.

Eric Lee, an analyst at Barclays Capital, said delaying a new OLED TV would be the latest indication of a more disciplined approach to the business. "It's probably better for Sony to hold off for now," said Mr. Lee. "I don't know who would be buying it."

The 27-inch model XEL-2 is incredibly 10 millimeters thin panel and offers over 1,000,000 :1 contrast ratio with outstanding brightness, exceptional color reproduction, and a rapid response time.

But maybe its the 21-inch which Sony showed at a Display Show in Japan.

This 21 inch device does have a resolution about 1366x768 pixel and is only 1 cm thick. The contrast ratio is 1.000.000:1 like the XEL-1

They wonder why nobody wants to spend $2,500.00 on an 11-inch TV using a technology that, while promising looking, is still an infant. I guess you don't need to have common sense if you expect that to make a profit.

Hopefully Samsung keeps track on larger sized OLED TVs.

No kidding. I cannot see a reason for ANYONE (including millionaires) to spend $2500.00 on an 11 inch screen EVER at this point. Heck my computer monitor is 22", so what could i possibly do with a 11" HDTV?

Sometimes Sony's detachment from reality still amazes me.

I suspect that there are people, with money, that just buy the latest and greatest no matter what the cost.

Does a Rolex tell time more accurately than a Timex?

I hear you, but we are talking about only an 11" screen here. I have not had a computer monitor that size since 1987 and that was a 12' green phosphor monochrome monitor.

Uses for this are limited with it just being that 11" size, since you would have to be watching within 1.5feet of the screen to fully resolve the resolution it has. No doubt there are a few people with more money than they need that have to be the first on the block to own something, but i suspect for this only 11" screen size and the $2,500.00 price tag, even most of those people wouldn't bother even for the bragging rights.

If Sony expected a lot more sales for THAT screen size at that price then they live in a fantasy world IMO.
