LG shows off plasma TV with one billion-to-one contrast ratio

LG has showed off two new plasma HDTVs dubbed the Xcanvas bobos 42PQ60D and 50PQ60D. The larger model boasts an unprecedented 1,000,000,000:1 contrast ratio and a 600Hz refresh rate.

Both models have built-in USB drives that allow users to playback many file types including WMV and DivX videos.

According to the source, "speakers are built into either TV, each of which is just over 3 inches thick. For efficient energy use, an ambient light sensor will dim the backlight of each set as conditions dictate, and the feature is said to reduce as much as 60 percent of a conventional plasma HDTV's energy use."

The TVs are set for release in Korea beginning mid-February with prices equivalent to $1,022 and $1,460 USD, respectively. There was no word on whether the TVs will have North American or European releases.

Sure they are 1 billion to 1.

I love how these mfg race to raise these specs ahead of their competitors without using the ANSI standard to achieve them. I bet to measure that CR, the displays are virtually unwatchable.

Thanks for the link though Lee!

Am I mistaken in my understanding that plasma does not use a backlight, but rather runs an electrical current in order to excite gases?

Iit uses a BL:

All the sensor does is increase the brightness automatically for a bright room environment and dim it for a dark room environment.

This feature has been around for decades.

I thought so too, though Ive never owned a plasma. Maybe someone can explain.

Plasma TVs do not have backlights – instead, they alter the brightness of the individual gas cells that make up the picture, saving power and creating much the same effect.

When they say "backlight" - and this is about PDP's - aren't they referring to some kind of light that is not part of the display - like those old Phillips light surround PDP's from a few years ago.

Either that or the article write has LCD on the brain.

How about showing off a Plasma tv that doesn't have a screen that looks like a mirror, that would be a MAJOR improvement.

I believe that is inherent of the glass substrate used for PDP's.

You said a mouthful, Joe. What good is a billion to one contrast ratio if the brightest thing on the screen remains the reflection of the lamp on the table behind the viewer.

Yeah, but think of the _fidelity_ of that reflected image! And realistically, this wouldn't be a problem at all if you watched TV in a bat cave. Or a black hole.
