LG 3D TVs will be here in 2009

News from the Far East

Quote:
LG will launch 3D TVs next year, we were told at their Digital TV Technology centre in Seoul today.

“3D TVs are the next big step for us,” said Choon Lee, Vice President Director at the Digital TV Research Lab. “We will try with one or two markets in 2009,” he said. Although he wouldn’t specify which markets.

“The start may come from home shopping channels. It’s easier to introduce and show off the products in 3D.” 3D QVC, here we come. “It’s relatively easy to make content for animation. So comics and shopping will be first. Then it will migrate into soaps and other areas.”

Although he said it wouldn’t involve replacing your whole home cinema set-up. “It will involve a slight change to Blu-ray, not replacing the discs.”

Japan already has two hours of 3D a day courtesy of a satellite broadcast, and in the US 3D cinemas are pretty commonplace.

We also got a peek at LG’s 3Dmonitor, although this will be for advertising, and not for our homes.

The monitor relies on a PC to run the software, so will run on completely different technology to the 3D TVs.

“Over the next few years we will see lots more 3D,” he added

I just hope people that buy these 3D TVs don't get up being stuck with a expensive non 3D display when the industry finally settles on some kind of "standard" for this.

Will you need special glasses for this? What prices are we talking?

This article would seem to give a bit away.. reading between the lines, this looks like a kind of vertical blind technology centered to each eye and might be an accidental spin off of the way LCD screen technology works with alternate layers. Reviewers that have seen it are impressed..

from the wiki :Another technique, for example used by the X3D company,[citation needed] is simply to cover the LCD with two layers, the first being closer to the LCD than the second, by some millimeters. The two layers are transparent with black strips, each strip about one millimeter wide. One layer has its strips about ten degrees to the left, the other to the right. This allows seeing different pixels depending on the viewer's position.

FTA: this year's Journey to the Center of the Earth grossed more than $101 million (U.S.) in Canada and the United States despite middling reviews.

"3D is coming; Samsung has already sold more than 2 million 3D-ready TVs and the Americans are building 3D-capable cinemas as fast as they can," said James Stewart, president of Toronto-based Geneva Films, which has worked extensively in 3D.

"There's even a TV network in Japan that broadcasts in 3D part of the time and James Cameron's next film, the $250 million Avatar, will be in 3D."

"People aren't aware that you can get the same sort of experience on a flat-panel display without wearing glasses," said Brad Casemore, Spatial View's vice-president of business development.

Spatial View has developed software that allows a PC's built-in camera to track the viewer's eyes in order to adjust the picture so the 3D effect is optimized.

Wow will resolutions be measured as 1920x1080y720z? Would you be able to have windows behind each other and look around to see all those windows behind? This would multiply screen estate expotentionally!

Post 3-D Movie Plans Stall as Theaters Curtail Spending

Cinedigm Digital Cinema Corp., a supplier of software to run digital theaters, had planned to convert as many as 1,500 screens by March 2009. Now, with funds on hold, the company expects 100 to 200

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?p...fer=exclusive#

The credit crisis is stalling plans to convert thousands of theaters to digital projection, threatening profits on more than a dozen 3-D films Hollywood will release next year, including DreamWorks Animation SKG’s “Monsters vs Aliens.”

That looks amazing, but is only good when watching alone unfortunately. If they could get that for EVERYONE watching to see that I would love it!
