Arrow Philips' 56" HDTV Does 3D without the Funky Glasses

Quote:
Autostereoscopic. Ever heard that term before? Philips hopes you'll be hearing a lot more of it, and yesterday announced a line of Quad Full Autostereoscopic 3D HDTVs during a 3D event in Hollywood.

A Quad-HDTV means it's screen resolution checks in at 3840x2160 (8.29 million pixels), or four times that of the highest HDTV standard, and otherwise known as 2160P. Combined with autostereoscopic technology, the end result is that 3D images can be made to look believable without having to wear those funky glasses or other specialized headgear. Instead, images target a specific eye, but rather than require a strict viewing angle, Philips says its 56-inch HD 3D display has a generous 160-degree viewing angle.

As expected, first-run products won't come cheap with early rumblings putting this TV in the $25,000 ballpark. But Philips isn't the only one pushing 3D technology - Toshiba and Sanyo have both said they're working on competing autostereoscopic displays, which could drive down the price if this technology takes off.

Since Philips quit making TV's for the US market, I doubt we will ever see one here.

I've never been able to "see" autostereograms, and I'm not alone. They require you to fixate your eyes at a point behind the image, which at the very least takes some practice. It's hard enough trying to do that to take a quick look at a picture. I couldn't imagine maintaining that fixation long enough to watch a movie. You'd end up permanently crossed eyed, kind of like in the movie The Jerk.

Well for me viewing stereoscopic images using the "Parallel" method is quite easy for me. Since I have a some what lazy eye, making my eye shift off is really easy, and I managed to view these type of images easily.

Though I don't know the difference between this TV and the method of ding it with a standard TV/monitor, but I guess it would be just as easy for me.

But I don't intend on doing it for extended periods of time. Part of the machanics of viewing the world in 3D involves the fact that objects closer to you require you to focus on them differently. (as in, objects further away will be blurry, since your eyes are focused on the close object), so as far as I can tell, no TV or other similer device can actually replicate the focus effect, so I always end up with my eyes feeling funky after words. So unless they invent something similar to a holoprojector off of Star Trek, then I won't be investing in any kind of 3D technology anytime soon.

That's about $25,000 USD.
