Post Laser DLP's

Some manufacturers were showing off laser driven DLP's at this years CES. Here's an article which reviews this upcoming technology and explains how it works.

Yes, they are high definition and by what viewers are saying they look better then either LCD or Plasma, the main drawback is that they are thicker, the 1st models could be 9 to 10 inches deep (could be hung on a wall but not as easily).

And supposedly they will have all the connections that are available and coming available on the present flat panel televisons (HDMI, HDMI 1.3, Component, audio). Think of it, why would they introduce a brand new format technology and not offer the advanced features already available and coming soon on present technology?

The SUN is the purest form of light know to man, but laser is the purest MANUFACTURED light known to man. Slight distinction I know.

Seriously though, LED is said to have a "purer" light compared to UHD lamps, but all the reviews I have seen for LED based DLP RPTVs has been subpar, so I think the light source "purity" is only part of the equation.

Let's hope that these Laser based DLPs do a better job coming out of the gate compared to what the LEDs did. It certainly holds a lot of promise for saving money on lamps over the course of a RPTV's life to the owner. I just thank God that I got an unlimited lamp warranty from BB with my DLP. I am on my 3rd lamp so far in just over 28 months. Mine is on for ridiculous hours per day every day and if the lamp didn't get 7500 hours for my model it would be even more lamps.

I know I'm too picky, but the light source in an RPTV doesn't matter to me, I still don't like watching images *through* a screen.

I don't see how it could be better than direct view (CRT, LCD or Plasma).

I don't even see how it could be as good as direct view. Better in some aspects I'm sure, but better overall?

I think if at the proper viewing angle, RPTV has some of the best PQ out there. Everything has a screen of some sort. Even the direct view sets go through something like a screen of sorts, and of course the screen used in a FP system makes a big difference in the PQ. It is more on what side of the "screen" the image is projected on really.

LCD currently has a response time too slow for my eyes. Here is an interesting article about LCD response time ratings:

http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,12...1/article.html

I like plasmas but they seem to have more noise in shaded/dark areas from what I have seen so far. They also seem to exhibit more banding with slight color gradations over a wide area.

No question that when it comes to color & black lelvels CRT cannot be beat..... YET. I cannot wait to see SED when it comes out. Other than burn-in it seems to solve most problems (in the lab anyway) and compromises, that the other technologies have.

PFC, I think in that two year old article they were referring to LCD projection and its lag time, not LCD flat panel displays.

No it was LCD flat panel displays and they STILL use differing specs from mfg to mfg, and even sometimes between different models from the same mfg. Besides, the response time is relavent whether it is for RPTVs, FP, or LCD flat panels as they are using panels the same tech just on different scales/sizes for the panels.

It is like the inkjet printer print speed ratings on not as bad. LCD panels ARE getting much faster but they STILL have the slowest response times of all the current tech used in HDTVs.

I have been familiar with the laserTV technology about by the time the first announcement has been made. It looks very promising, and it has an upcoming advantage as the projector would be suitable for wall projection too, with increased brightness and much smaller projector. Other advantages are the low power consumption and the life duration of the laser projector. As for the dimensions, I suppose that the depth will be reduced enough to make it not space-eating.
The problem is that there are lots of companies producing LCD and plasma TV's, many of them just for a few years. They will not support this technology until they will see that other companies are taking on the market, as they have to cover the costs of their production lines yet. It is significant, in my opinion, that one of the companies which presented a laserTV was Sony, which is well known for the innovative spirit and receptivity to the new. Unfortunately, this is also a reason for the other companies to oppose this technology, as they have always opposed Sony.
Personally, I plan to buy a HDTV, sometime in the beginning of 2008, and hopefully by that time laserTV will be on the market.

I never heard that Sony would do a DLP using Laser technology. Do you have a link to that info?

Sony has been firmly in the LCD & SXRD (LCOS) camps and AFAIK, has never done A DLP display.

EDIT:

Nevermind about that link. It is part of that OP link.

About Sony, a movie I found on the internet presenting a LaserTV was showing a Sony brand. I don't know how correct is that, but that is what I saw.

they will be in stores this month or next. (September or October).
I also talked to Samsung and they told me the lasers will be out before the end of the year.
I was really surprised that they told me anything about them.
So save your dollars and get a real tv that will probably outlast anything on the market today.
I just hope this new technology is as good as novulux and arastar predict they will be.
Time will tell. I could not get a price list or the sizes that they will make.

Let's hope they will not be priced out of sight.
