Mitsubishi show 155 inch OLED-Tv consists of 720 10-centimeter-square panels

Quote:
Mitsubishi Electric displays a 155-inch sized OLED display, which consists of small sized OLED parts (estimated size is a 10x10cm square unit) at the Ceatec 2009. The large scale OLED display has been developed for digital signage and monitors placed at public spaces. The screen is three times brighter than regular liquid crystal display TVs.

Another advantage of the screen's modular design is that there is no limit to how big the display can be made. The size of a video screen made using the displays is only limited by the resolution of the image, such as a high-definition video. But for advertising or other application, there's no limit to how big the screen can be, Terazaki said, saying it would theoretically be possible to cover an entire city with a single display

Mitsubishi said the Diamond Vision OLED screen is expected to have a lifespan of 20,000 hours of normal operation.Source.

Why not turn an entire wall into a virtual window?

In a home environment - you will be too close to the image - you will see all the join lines of the panels.

Since this thread is current I have a question. I remember reading that OLED's would be able to give really good black levels, comparable to CRT's. Is that true? I was talking to someone about a week ago and they said OLED's weren't going to have good black levels.

OLED is a self generating light source display - like CRT and PDP - unlike LCD and LCOS and DLP that requires a seperate light source then blocks the light to create black. Self generating - off (meaning no light) is black and that is why they have excellent black levels.

Interesting point mentioned in the movie in that link. The chemicals used in OLED displays deteriorate over time so the expected lifespan of a display made with these would be 20,000 hours or around 2 - 3 years.

We all know that Sony has a commercially available OLED set right now, I wonder if it is only going to last that short time as it is so expensive and do they point that out to purchasers?
Just under $2000 for an 11" set.

20k hours would be almost 7 years at 8 hours per day every day of the year. It is still only 1/5 the life of the recent plasma screens rated at 100k hours, or 1/3 the rated life of the LCD screens rated at 60K hours.

OLED is still a few (likely 4-5 years IMO) away from being a true option for the average household at reason prices & comparable life spans I think.

They were of course referring to that particular arrangement where it would have been used as street ads on 24 hours per day.

Yep, it's a nice toy for someone with money to burn. Amazing technology, which I'm sure will be surpassed pretty soon....holographic TV perhaps...?

Yes if on for 24/7 it will only last about 2.28 years.

Iam sure there will be people that still choose LCD and talk about the burn-in possibility with OLED since it will be possible. We do not know how prone to burn-in OLED will be, but it will be there to some degree wince each pixel provides it's own luminance instead of back lighting. Hopefully they are working on minimizing that like they did with CRT & plasma, and they also work on longevity of the OLED materials used when they come to market with reasonably priced large screens.

Thanks Lee. That's what I thought but I wanted to check after this person said that.
