I want to ask your opinion on how long it will take to establish a 3D standard and when television sets and Blue-ray disks will be readily available?

I am planning to upgrade my television set from a high definition picture tube set to flat panel. Should I wait? My current set is 7 years old.

1. There will be more than one 3D standard. The two most popular will be Active Shutter Glasses (Blu-ray) and Polarized (broadcast)

2. 3D HDTV's and 3D Blu-ray players will be available Q4 2010.

And they will likely be more expensive also. If you are willing to wait roughly 2+ years for enough 3D releases and equipment with reasonable prices to make the purchase then wait. But if you are comfortable with reselling (or moving a purchase now to another room when the 3DTVs come out) then buy now and deal with what to do when that day comes would be my advice. Of course all subject to your finances & budget.
