Does anyone know what the actual HD resolution is for the VOD movie rentals? Just wondering if we are better off going through the Xbox 360 seeing how those are 1080P there for the same cost as the U-Verse charges and sometimes even less?

They seem to be the same as any of their other HD. If you want 1080p, I'd go with the X-box. U-verse does not have a 1080p output.

Thanks - I did not think that they were 1080 but some of the HD VOD rentals get up there in price for some reason compared to others (not sure why though) and thought going through the Xbox 360 was a better deal and quality maybe.

They charge for the content not necessarily the format. Probably a factor of what they have to pay for the rights to offer the viewing.
Besides, most people don't have HDTVs that can take advantage of 1080p since there is only an advantage quality wise if the HDTV can accept a 1080p/24 fps signal AND the HDTV will display it as a multiple of 24 fps like 48, 72, 96 or 120 Hz. There is no advantage for a HDTV that will accept 1080p/24, but displays at 60 Hz over a 1080i/30 signal that the U-verse provides (assuming a good deinterlacer in the TV) since the movies were shot at 24fps. Same for providing the HDTV with a 1080p/60 Hz signal. The 1080p/60 will be better for gaming, but no advantage for movies. Last edited by rbinck; 03-26-2010 at 07:25 AM. |
