Default HDMI connection vs. component

I recently suscribed to U-verse and the technician who did the install suggested I use component cables oppose to the HDMI cable I previously had installed, is there any reason to this?

Component doesn't suffer from HDMI HDCP handshake issues and therefore less lag time when switching channels among other things...

In addition to what Loves said, most installers, including cable and satellite, will suggest component over HDMI because they will generally get fewer callbacks when component cables are used. Many HDTVs and A/V receivers will have compatibility issues due to the HDCP handshake as Loves said. The problem for them is it can be hit and miss, work one time and not the next if the timing is on the ragged edge. So they can install and leave the system working only for it to fail to connect the next day. No such issues with component.

I would say on anything other than a Blu-ray player that component has the ability to produce as good a picture as HDMI. Component video will do 1080i just fine. U-verse won't do 1080p, only 1080i or 720p for the HD resolutions.

Component are analog connections and do send 1080i signal which is the best cable/satellite companies send.

Component will also send a 1080p connection, but the TV must be able to recognize that signal.

You are correct. Component is fully capable of carrying a 1080p signal but most devices limit it to 1080i.

Component is capable of 1080p, but the U-verse box won't send it. Only 1080i and 720p currently.

This is correct, Uverse is not broadcasting anything in 1080p yet

I am a real novice at how to hook things up, I just like to watch TV and get a good picture and good sound - whether it be watching a football game or a movie. My husband and I just made the decision to switch to UVerse and were told the installer would simply switch out our Direct TV box with the UVerse box and would leave everything else as it is. The set up we currently have has never given us anything that seems like surround sound to us, so I would like to make sure we have everything else hooked up correctly. The equipment I have is:

A Toshiba 65HM167 rear projection TV (The back panel has Colorstream HD-1, Colorstream HD-2, and Video-1 in connections, ANT in connection, HDMI -1, 2, & 3 connections, Digital Audio Out connection, IR Out connection, and Fixed Audio (L&R) Out connection)

A Yahama HTIB system with a HTR-6130 AV Receiver (The back panel has Digital Input - Optical for CD, Optical for DTV/CBL and coaxial for DVD; HDMI in for DVD and HDMI in for Cable TV or sat tuner; HDMI out for video monitor; Component Video in for DVD, DVT/CBL, and DVR; Component video out for Video Monitor; Multi Channel input for Front, Surround, Center (L&R); Video (yellow cable) for DVD, DTV/CBL, DVR (in & out), & Monitor out; Audio (red & white cable) for DVD, DVT/CBL, DVR (in & out), CD, and MD/CD-R (in & out); and all of the hookups for the HTIB speakers.

A Smasung DVD-VR375 DVD/VCR recorder/player combo (The back panel has HDMI out, Video (yellow cable) in and out; Audio (red & white cable) in and out; Component Audio and Video out jacks, and Digital Audio coaxial out jack.

My understanding is that we are going to get the Uverse Motorola DVR receiver (The back panel has Coaxial in from Uverse, HDMI out, Component video out, S-video out, Video (yellow cable) out; Audio (red & white cable) out; Coaxial out, and optical (S/PDIF) audio out to Digital home theater receiver.

Each one of the users manuals for each of these pieces of equipment has samples of how to hook things up, but non have the same assortment of equipment I have - and they, of course, all say to use the same inputs and outputs....

Does anyone have any pictures of how all of this should be hooked up to work properly, or would anyone be willing to explain it to me? I just want to be able to either watch my TV with normal sound (not through the receiver) or watch a movie either on DVD or a HD chanel and be able to get surround sound from my HTIB, and be able to record DVDs when I want to do that....

I would appreciate any help!!

Thanks

You can hook your HDMI output from the U-verse box to your HDTV. Then hook the optical out from the U-verse box to the surround system. Then there is a menu selection in the options menus for setting the audio to stereo or 5.1 surround sound.

Thats odd. Everything Ive ever seen swears up and down that you should use hdmi over component. Though I wasnt aware of this "handshake" issue some have mentioned.
