Cool Center Speaker Placement?

hi I did a search & checked the stickies (which are great BTW) but couldnt find the answer to my question:
Can the center channel speaker be placed on top of the TV? Reason I ask is this: I have a Sony XBY HDTV CRT 40" with an amazingly beautiful sharp image which just cant be replicated with the newer types of TVs IMH but... the outer edges are "bleeding" in a purple/green/bluish hue. I read somewhere on this site that it could be from a magnetic field. Is the magnet in the center speaker that powerful? I have a Cambridge Soundworks MC400center speaker about a foot or more wide.
Thanks for any help- sara

Hi and welcome to HDF!

If the speaker is not magnetically shielded, it can cause the screen of CRTs to discolor, as you mentioned. There really is no easy fix unless you can get the speaker up a bit higher.

Although not ideal, you can set the center channel speaker on top of TV and aim it slightly downward (pointing to the listening position).

CRTs use a magnetic field in the picture tube to draw the scan lines so it is bad for the CRT to have speakers that are not shielded this close to the CRT. You will have to get a shielded center channel to protect against harming your CRT based HDTV.

For a center channel, which should be as close to the actual display as possible for a proper sound stage, you must get a shielded speaker, or move it so far away that it will harm the sound stage. I recommend you move it away from the CRT immediately and then look for a shielded replacement ASAP.
