Ok I just got a new xbox 360 with an HDMI port on it. I have a Samsung 5.1 dolby digital surround sound system. My receiver does not have a HDMI port where I can get sound out of it. So with my old xbox 360 I just used the xbox 360 component cabe with the 5.1 port on it with an optical cable. I really want to use HDMI cause the picture just looks better to me. So I did this on my Samsung T.V. it has an optical output on the back of the T.V. so I plugged an optical cable into the optical port on the back of my T.V. to my receiver When the xbox 360 is connected by HDMI and I get sound out of all my speakers! But is this 5.1 dolby digital surround im getting or is this a lower quality surround sound? Thanks!!!!!

The optical output on your TV will NOT output anything but plain old stereo sound. You have to run the sound from the 360 DIRECTLY into a receiver in order to get the full 5.1 sound. OR - time to upgrade your receiver to one that accepts HDMI.

M$ makes an audio adapter for your HDMI equipped 360 that will allow you to run an optical cable to your receiver. That is the cheapest way to be sure you are getting full and true 5.1 audio.

I wanted to do the same thing with my home theater system too. I ultimately just plugged both the hdmi cable and the component cable into the back of the 360. There's plenty of videos on youtube that show you how to do it. Once I did that, I ran the optical cable from my component cable directly into my home theater receiver just like someone mentioned above and then the hdmi to my tv. Everything worked perfectly. You mentioned you have an extra set of component cables so I'm assuming you wouldn't mind taking one apart for this. I did and it saved me $50

I would not worry about a fire hazard at all.. But for only $16 with a HDMI cable, why not just get the adapter.. Either way, you will be good to go.
