Hey everybody.
So generally, I'm familiar with the setup of my 5.1 surround sound system. I have a separate DVD player that has a digital optical cable that successfully transfers the 5.1 Dolby Digital surround sound to my Panasonic receiver. However, my XBOX 360 is not transferring the same signal. My 360 is connected directly to the Samsung TV via an HDMI cable. Then, the TV sends the sound to the receiver with another digital optical cable thru the video-auxilary slot. However, when I set the amp input to V-aux, only a stereo (2) signal is received. Where is the surround signal getting lost? Note: When I watch regular TV, I can get a 5.1 surround signal thru the digital optical cable. I've been trying to figure this out for some time now! All help is much appreciated. Could it possibly be some of the options that can be configured thru menus? Let me know what you all think. |

The reason for this is because your TV's optical out will only do DD 5.1 via it's digital tuners (ATSC/QAM).. It will down convert the HDMI devices to 2 channel stereo only.. Just like you are experiencing..
I assume your SS receiver does not have HDMI. In order to get DD 5.1 with your 360, you will need to connect the optical out from it to your receiver. The include the HDMI/Optical adapter with the Elite, I think. If you don't have it, it costs like $40n I think.. http://joeygadget.com/2007/08/22/xbo...audio-adapter/

Very few TVs will pass DD 5.1 from external devices. Generally, a TV optical output only feeds 5.1 from the set's internal tuner. It's the only way to get DD 5.1 to a receiver if you don't have a cable or satellite box. But, check your TV's manual. It probably explains how the optical output works.
You generally need to run audio direct to the receiver, not through the TV. Last edited by BIslander; 05-07-2009 at 10:22 PM. |

As the other two said, your Samsung TV will only send a stereo signal out theoptical cable when the input source is component or hdmi. I'll be in your TV manual.
