I presently have an Onkyo HTR-550 receiver which came as part of a complete home surround system. This receiver does the video only on the HDMI input so I have to have the toslink (fiber) connection for my audio, I'm not real fond of this and want to switch recievers and I'm looking at the Onkyo 706. I also have the Sony BDP-S350 BD player which from what I read has some audio limitations of its own
Here are the questions I have:
#1: Will I get true HD audio with this BD player and reciever combination? If not, is the BD player the weak link and is there a firmware upgrade coming from Sony that will make this combination work the way it is supposed to work? (I know it's 2 questions but they pertain to the same subject)
#2: If I use the HDMI as my only connections for audio and video from my BD player and my cable box into the 706 will I have to always have the reciever on to view these 2 components? I don't like to use my sorround sound for everything I watch, I don't see any reason to hear 2.5 men in surround sound, as my system is right now I have to have my reciever turned on to watch anything on my TV that uses the HDMI cable as it's video connection...don't like that
Eddie,

Question 2: If you run HDMI from a source...IE Direct TV via HDMI into your receiver and out to your TV...then yes you WILL have to have your receiver on for everything. I personally like this option myself because it means you will NEVER, NEVER EVER have to change your video mode on your tv again. All of your video/audio switching goes through your receiver with the touch of ONE BUTTON. This makes the Mrs. VERY VERY happy. On the Onkyo 706 my wife hits a button that says CBL/SAT to watch Direct TV, hits "DVD" to watch the Blue Ray. My Onkyo remote can pretty much do it all. I'm curious why would you not want to listen on surround? I think the center channel always sounds better for everything.

If you want to accomplish what you mentioned (ability to keep receiver off) then you don't need a new receiver. Just run HDMI from source (ie Direct TV) directly to your TV and then run an optical cable to your receiver. This way you can keep the receiver out of the mix for 2.5 men. The negative (especially for the Mrs) is that once you switch the video mode on the TV you have to also remember to go turn on your receiver (extra remote) and switch it to the same mode to get the audio. This type of exercise while simple to many of us can drive the signifcant other crazy.

Question 1: I would assume HDMI from the Sony would work fine running HDMI into the Onkyo. I own a Panny BD35 and it is no problem at all. Stupid easy setup.

My TV only has a single HDMI input which is why a reciever with 4 HDMI inputs would come in real handy. It would act as my HDMI A/B/C/D switch, just like the one I have now acts as my HDMI A/B switch. I know for a fact that some recievers allow signal to pass through even when the power is off, I'm wondering if this is true with the Onkyo 706. You're telling me no and the more I think about it: if the power is off, what device would it default to...maybe that's programmable, Hmmmm.
I've read enough information about "our" BD players to know that the audio issue (I can't explain it, I just know there is one) I have with my Sony 350 is not an issue with the Panny BD35, mine was a gift from my wife so returning it is really not an option
Still looking for answers, thanks

i have a HDMI issue with my tx-sr 706. Until recently it was working fine connected to my xbox 360 via HDMI and to my foxtel satelite also via HDMI. now it seems to be searching for the source, finding it and loosing it again. This happens over and over until i reset the amp and/or the other device then it works fine until i switch inputs. I have done a reset/clear on the amp and checked/replaced cables and changed settings and had no luck. Anyone had or having the same issue?

Sounds like a HDMI HDCP handshake issue. You would be best served by finding firmware updates/upgrades for the satellite box and the TV.
