Default Decent Surround Sound System under $200

I know this forum is usually dedicated to high end products, hopefully this can be an exception. I've had the same JVC 5.1 reciever for about a decade it seems, I pretty much got it when Digital Surround hit the market. Any ways I'm looking for a new Surround system but I'm on a budget.

In the last 4 months I spent about a grand on my Xbox 360 and games and accessories. Just over a grand on a new LCD. So I really can't afford to spend another grand on a surround system right now.

Does anyone know a descent surround setup for $200 give or take, preferably under??
I want to avoid systems with built in DVD player sisnce I already have an upcovert HDMI player.
I also must have digital surround.

My last question, Does any one use a pc surround setup with theyre home audio?? I noticed that a few of the Logitech pc surrounds are compatible with xbox, dvd players, etc, do they work well as Home theater surround??? And do they have enough power???

I guess if the thread isn't controversial then it doesn't get a post. Here's something controversial,

Sony is overpriced and generally suck pretty hard. They claim to be high end but in reality they are only at the high end of medium quality products.

OK, I'll bite.
Frankly, I don't know of any sound system for under $200 regardless of brand, that does not suck. If you want something of PC size, then both Creative and Klipsch make nice ones. I hear the Logitechs are nice too. But these kind of systems with an nice HD display is like putting Corolla tires on a Corvette.

You've got to pay at least 4 or 5 hundred to get a 'decent' HTIB, and even then I would not get a Sony. Only a manufacturer that specializes in speaker systems, and not a Blows either!
Unless you are not critical about audio, then just get something that 'looks good' from Wally World, Sears, or KMart.

Depending on the room size a PC 5.1 system could be ok. I used a Cambridge Soundworks unit for a while and combined with a good subwoofer it performed quite well in a small room. I use it in my bedroom now with the 18" subwoofer and it still sounds very good. They have enough power for the mid range and highs, but are in need of help in the subwoofer department.

Yeah, I'll prob just wait a bit untill I feel i have enough extra cash to warrant spending $500 on a home theater setup.

I'm still curious what other people have and what they think of what they own. I have a super old JVC 5.1 reciever with DTS, my speakers are next to worthless.

I'm wondering if I should just by new surround speakers or should I buy a whole new system???

Should I buy a system packaged together or should I piece it together??

I've heard some good Sony' surround and some bad, how do I know what to choose??? For example, I know Onkyo and Denon are good brands but which Onkyo should i buy, they can't all be good???

My biggest complaint is my rear speakers pop when playing video games with gun fire and explosions, maybe I should save money and keep the reciever I have and spend a little more for better speakers???

Also, please don't suggest anything that costs a grand, I like nice stuff but that's too expensive. I spent $1000 for my LCD, but I won't pay that much for a stereo. Just my point of view, obviously if i was rich I would.

So please keep your suggestions reasonalbe unless you have a super expensive setup and just want to share, then thats okay.

Yeah, exactly, it is Onkyo, but is a cheap Onkyo still good??? Would spending $300 on an Onkyo get me any better of a system than spending $300 on say pioneer or Sony??

As I said, I already own a JVC 5.1 recieveer w/ Dolby Digital and DTS via Digital Optical cable. It is an older reciever, prob 5 - 6 yrs old.

So should I just buy a good set of speakers and keep this reciever, or do I need a new reciever as well??

I'm thinking of just buying a speaker set for like $200 - $300 and keeping the reciever despite its age, it does have DTS.

What do you think??

i see there are some peeps here now, rbnick....

I see alot of surround sets, example Polk has a 5.1 set for 199.99, I'm just scared I'll spend 2 - 3 hundred on speakers and they'll still pop when playing games with gun fire or watching movies with explosions.

The speakers I have now snap crackle and pop like crazy, especially the rear speakers. i have 12" Pioneer;s for the fronts, but the rears are crap, well fronts aren't good either really.

I'm truly too embarrased to even mention the brand or center and rears I have, lets just say I didn't find any that cost less at the time.

$200 polk is better than onkyo, anything made by speakers manufacturer is better as compared to speakers made by ONKYO, SONY, Panasonic, they probably bought some cheap speakers and put their label on. do not expect any good from speakers stand point, their receiver might be good. The only good HTIB is from Harman/Kardon because they make both speakers and and Receiver very good, but it will be out from price range. u should try ebay for some used item, at least it will give you good quality. at $200 price range you not find good quality, for booming sound you need decent receiver which are far more expensive than $200.
if you will find anything under $200 it will give good surround sound at low sound levels as soon as u go higher sound levels you will start hearing distortion and all other stuff that you will not find in high to mid range systems.

Thank you very much, I am definetly checking out some of the ebay stores.

Is SDAT a good brand, I assume you chose to show me this one for a reason???

I don't know much about home stereos or which brand is good either.

If you ever have a question about car stereo then feel free to ask, that's my area. I've been installing car stereos since I was 15, I've heard everything and seen everything. I'm a bass head so to speak. Surprising I know so much about car stereos yet i know nothing about home stereos, you wouldn't believe how different they can be.

I once hooked up a 1000watt Phioenex Gold 10th aniversary edition amp to two JL w7's in my buddies jeep. Lets just say the amp is worth almost as much as the jeep. Also, 1000watts is VERY VERY conservative figure, it's pure clean watts. You could have 5 amps totaling 5000watts and this Phionex Gold amp will still blow it all away. The amp required a Gel Cell battery as well as a distribution block/capicitor. Could have easily blown the windows out as well as your ear drums. Insane, but..... I don't know a damn thing about home audio. Also that PG amp, at the time only 12 were shipped to US and Canada, audio nuts in the know would sell there kidneys for one. They might be more availible now, I'm not sure.

I really have never heard of the brand SDAT. I didn't a search on Ebay just out of curiousity to see what was available for a 5.1 system within your price range....they kinda look like bose speakers.

I went to the SDAT website and seems perfect for your price range....they even have auto audio stuff.

Cool, thanks again, yeah they do look like bose a bit. I am seriously considering that very set, I mean for that price, you can't really go wrong.

I imagine theyre not the best sounding system but as long as they don't pop and crackle during action scenes then its all good.

Once again, thankyou, its rare for people to go out of their way for other people, especially on a forum where people prefer to just get in heated arguments, but I'm guilty there as well.
