I am looking for in wall/in ceiling speakers. I am currently using Bose 301 bookshelf speakers for my rears but my wife is tired of looking at them and would like something that isn't as noticeable. I currently have a harmon karden receiver, klipsch 6.5 towers with the matching center channel and a klipsch 12" powered sub. I would like to find a reasonably priced set of rear speakers hopefully without losing a ton of quality sound. Its is difficult to get an idea how they sound in a store and I would like to have an idea on what is good before I go make a purchase and start cutting holes in my wall or ceiling. Any suggestions?

In wall. http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2
If you would rather go with a ceiling rear setup http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2

Thanks for the information, I think I am going to try the round speakers. I do like the in wall they have a bit larger tweeter. I also like the pivoting tweeter since the speakers are going to be in the ceiling about 4 feet behind my couch. I agree about the bose. When we moved in this house I didn't have rear speakers and used them as a quick fix (8 years ago) and I am excited to get rid of them. I was nervous about the sound quality with inwall/inceiling speakers but they have come a long way the last few years. Also should I enclose the back of the speaker? They are going to be in the ceiling under a bedroom.

We installed a pair of Definitive Technology in-wall speakers for surrounds in our family room. They sound great.
Surrounds should be on the sides, even with or slightly behind the listening position, btw. Rear speakers are added in 7.1 systems. |

I just opened my speakers and I have been doing some reading, should I build an enclosure in the ceiling around the speaker and if I should what are your suggestions?

How does the Monoprice in-ceiling speakers (6.5") link above compare to the HTD HD-R65? I will be putting either one as rear-fill for a 5.1 surround system.

I finally was able to install the speakers into my ceiling I put a 4 ft piece of r-30 9 and a half inch thick insulation behind the speakers. My issue is that they do not seem loud. I have adjusted my receiver but they don't seem that loud. The built in crossover is at 0 should I adjust it to -3 or -6? Any suggestions? But they do sound crisp.

Have you set levels by playing test tones from your AVR or a disc?

I was adjusting the speakers manually I am going to run an auto set up tonight to see if that helps. I put on avengers and my 10 year old said "Dad those aren't as loud as the old ones" So hopefully the test tones help.

Are the new speakers in the ceiling in an enclosure or are they just bare in the ceiling. Because without an enclosure you will be lossing a lot of sound escaping from the rear (unprotected) part of the speakers.

the joists are 2X10 so I put in a 4 ft piece of 9 and 1/2 inch thick insulation behind each speaker. I watched the video on the monoprice website and that is what they recommended. Is there anything else you would recommend?

I have seen that there are enclosures but is it necessary?
