Default Setting up Bass Output on a Yamaha Reciever

I have a yamaha 465 hdmi receiver with 5 polk audio speakers and a jbl 10' sub. My front left and right speakers are Polk TSI400's floor standing. My center is a Polk CS10 and my rear speakers are Polk bookshelf TSI100's. When I run auto calibration using the yamaha mic it sets everything up ok but my bass output. It automatically detects my bass output to the sub instead of my front two speakers. There is an option to change the bass output to both front and sub. I was wondering if I should keep it on sub or change it to both speaker and sub. When I bought the Polk floor standing speakers I was under the impression that they would also provide bass.

Yes usually you will want the low frequency bass to be sent to the sub and not to the front speakers, this is normally accomplished to setting all your speakers to small. Setting your speakers to small does not really have anything to do with the size of your speakers but really means you have a sub that you want to supply the low bass. Sending the low frequency only to the sub provides more power for the main speakers at the level they work best and lets the sub and its amp handle the real low frequencies.

You use the crossover on your receiver to determine at what level the bass is sent to your sub. THX standard is 80hz setting for the crossover however this should be determined by the capabilities of your speakers and you should experiment with this setting. I set the crossover in my current system to 60hz right now as this seems best to me with this system. Some receivers have one crossover setting and some receivers have a setting for each speaker.

Also it is best to use your receivers crossover rather than the subs and you should turn the subs crossover OFF by setting it to to LFE or turn the crossover all the way up, it varies by the sub model.

The phase control on a sub has to do with the subs location and mating it with you other speakers, normally you would set the phase to the setting which provides the most bass, often this has little difference it depends on if there is any bass canceling happening, if there is the phase can help prevent the canceling.

Hope this helps.
