Default Onkyo 7.1

I just recently bought the Onkyo ht-s7100 7.1 surround sound system and had some questions.
here's the link
http://www.onkyousa.com/model.cfm?cl...ems&m=HT-S7100

First im going to be hookin up my xbox through hdmi into the input and run the hdmi output to my tv.
So i will only get surround sound when im playin xbox right?
If that is the case i was going to get a optical cable hookin it from my tv to the receiver so when im watching tv i can get sorround sound also. correct?
Thanks for any help

Default Onkyo

Yes, you will get surround sound from your Xbox, if that is what it is outputting. Concerning your TV sound, you failed to mention what the signal source is ( antenna, cable, satellite ). If it's anything other than OTA, you will ONLY get 2.0 stereo sound from the optical output on your TV. If you are using a set top box, you would run HDMI from it to your receiver, or digital optical/coaxial if no HDMI output. It's always best to run all components directly to your Onkyo. Then run a single HDMI back to your TV. Make sure you thoroughly read your owner's manual so that you become familiar with the different sound fields and capabilities of the 7100. It is an awesome HTiB.

If you have digital cable and connection your cable coax strait to the TV (and your TV has a QAM tuner), you can simply connect the digital optical cable you described from the TV to the Onkyo. This will allow DD 5.1 (for the programs that broadcast in DD 5.1). If not, it will simply be PCM 2.0. But can get sudo surround.

Word up. You can get 1 at Walmart for around $10-$15. Or you can get 1 here for around $4. If you need other cables like HDMI as well, this would be the place to go.

I got a cheap optical switcher from monoprice as well. It's a 3 input optical switcher I believe for under $20 and their optical cables were cheap too!!
