Default 8 ohm speakers with HTIB

I have read that you shouldn't use lower ohm speakers(3-4 ohms) with 8 ohm AVR's. What would happen if you did the opposite? Hooked 8 ohm speakers to an HTIB that has 3 ohm speakers matched to it?

Owners manual says 143 watts per channel at 3 ohms(surround mode).

Seriously, I would replace that AVR with something else made by a quality AVR manufacturer like Pioneer, Onkyo, Yamaha, Denon, etc.

3 Ohms is very odd to begin with (may be some proprietary thing) and Sony is NOT known for its quality audio equipment, in fact the reverse is true.

The wife is happy with it so it won't be replaced for awhile. I was just wondering what would happen if one did that. I am assuming that no damage would occur to the Sony(or another system like it) if high ohms speakers were attached to it.

Who knows as it could overdrive the speakers to damage.

Using higher impedance speakers than those the amp/receiver is rated for is usually not a problem unless you have too great a mismatch. Just don't expect the amp/receiver to be able to drive them to the same sound output levels. In other words, expect lower volume from the speakers for the same volume settings on the amp/receiver.

However, if you have to crank up the volume on the amp/receiver to near maximum just to get a half-decent volume sound, then you do have too great a mismatch. You'll end up with fatigue-inducing distortion in the sound and will be putting undue stress on the amp/receiver. In this case you should stick with the speakers that came with your so-called "Dream System" or get a better receiver with less "odd ball" specs. (3 ohms is odd ball).
