Default LG DVB418 - perfect player?

I am in the market for a new dvd player, as my sony is getting a little old, I have done some searching, and have found this LG DVB418 it plays nearly everything from divx files to mp3s, upconverts dvds to HD, has a 7-in-2 memory card slot, and i believe it can easily (no ir device like the Sonys, but just a cd-r) be made region-free.
What do you guys think? Anyone have one?

If all those features are important to you, don't expect audio/video performance to be that great. Most HDMI output players selling under $200 are over-rated and under-performing.
That's not to say they will not deliver a quality picture under ideal conditions. The problem is, most DVDs vary in quality, and digital artifacts can be even more disturbing that with an analog player.
And these are NOT HD players. Don't confuse digital output players (HDMI and DVI) with HD players that are not available yet. And when they are will cost several hundreds of dollars for a basic one (initially anyway).

But looks like DVI only for the good stuff....

Just looking at the review of the LG and you may want to have a look before you commit.

"Summary: The LG DVB418 is a player with numerous bugs to work out. There is a lot of potential for a great player here if LG would have been a bit more careful in their implementation. Attention to detail can go a long way in the video department, and I really hope LG ups the quality control the next time around. They have a new HDMI-based DVD player due later this summer, and I hope it is a big improvement over this one."

I agree. the Oppo is a better choice. Better customer service I would bet too.

I got my OPPO yesterday - replaces a Samsung 841 - seems to operate flawlessly on Aviator - I am able to tweak every video and audio parameter that I feel is necessary - so far so good - I use it at 1080i with a medium sharpness setting - I have several other older analog higher-end players and this one seems to be the best picture and plenty of features and simple menus - read the amazon.com reviews for some useful opinions on this unit - I ordered it directly form OPPO and got it in 2 days with $14 shipping charge - comes with a DVI or HDMI cable. -Haven't tried it with a non-compliant display but it is supposed to work with those also.- converts from and to Pal (region free)also as I understand.

one user on videohelp.com reported that this player could play "WMVHD
DivXHD
XviDHD"
does it really play WMVHD?

I'm reading ALOT of good things about that OPPO Player. Seems like under $400, you cant find anything better.

If you want to use component cables instead, I think the Panasonics are doing very well.

An inisightful opinion that the player had great potential. I just picked up a refurbished DVB418, upgraded the firmware to the most recent LG LDA531 firmware and applied the remote hacks needed. The player is very good for the price now. Upscales over component and HDMI and plays many different formats. The Oppo is likely still better for DVD-V using DVI connections, but I bet the DVB418 is better for most everything else and at much less than half the price, the LG DVB418 is a real bargain. LG customer service isn't as good as Oppo service still, but just rely on the online gurus for best operation of the little player and it should be fine.

Can any1 please help me with this problem; I purchased the LG DVX9900H upscaling dvd player and it looks very good, clear picture etc but I can't get any sound? I am using HDMI-DVI-D cable to my HD tv. Do you just use this cable alone or any others? I have tried using few other wires such as scart with this but nothing! Im not entirely sure of the correct setup, any help please cos it's driving me nuts!

DVI only carries video so you would need to use one of the audio connection options as well.

I installed the player at my sister's house last year and she is still using it. I don't have any of those formats to check, but it is my belief that is all false. I don't believe the player can play any true HD format, only a wide selection of SD formats.
