This is worth consideration if you want to see what the fuss is about this player some consider great or the reason this overhyped player gets returned often.

Nice double entendre post Chris.

But, indeed, for $57 it provides an inexpensive opportunity to try the product "hands on".

As for why products get returned so often . . . I wonder that myself:
My last 4 computers have been Dell "open box" units (at 35% below new prices); they have all worked flawlessy with never a problem.
They certainly were not "overhyped" products nor defective in any manner, just great deals.

Guess you didn't get the memo - HD DVD is dead.

I suppose you can purchase the leftovers until there are no more, but the day will come when you will have to either go Blu or be satisfied with upscaling.

Guess you can't read a sig. because I have been dual format for quite some time! Lets see. PS3 (Bluray capable) and a Sony BD350 standalone. Plus I have 3 HD DVD players ALL capable of playing HD DVD's & regular DVD's which looks AMAZING when upconverted, plus I save a lot more money on HD movies! So, my friend its seems YOU didn't get the memo! Im well ahead enjoying my toys and you are still paying too much!

Although I find it hard to believe and would need to see it to believe it, there are quite a few here that indicate this DVD player does a better job upscaling DVD than the best HD DVD players. The player sold for $150 when released last year which obviously was too high. Toshiba had indicated that another player utilizing this technology is coming but with Blu-ray player prices collapsing and crushing DVD player prices underneath, I don't know what it could sell for. This price is about right for an open box XD-E500.

Wonder what makes you assume that I am "paying too much".

Let's see, I haven't purchased either a HD DVD player or a Bluray player.
I did spend $150 on an upscaler which also has recording capabilities, and also find that regular DVDs look "amazing" when upconverted.
And, of course, I haven't spent a dime on either HD or BD discs.
So, if the issue is whose saving "a lot more money", I'd say I'm way ahead of the game.
But, hey, if you enjoy burning money on the purchase of multiple players that support a discontinued format, I won't argue with your logic . . . although I'll never understand it.

I have it now and like it a lot so far for a $57 delivered DVD player. At this price for anyone with a display that accepts 1080p who doesn't want Blu-ray, I think it is a great budget player. It is so easy to use, the XDE settings are either on or off, your choice. I like the appearance and operational design as well as the performance. There is plenty of discussion about the player here and AVSForums if you are interested in reading about it. With 4:3 formatted DVD's you probably need to have it set to 480p which means no XDE processing. The competition at the original $150 price made it terribly overpriced comparatively but at the current Amazon price and even better this open box price, it sure looks good to me. I haven't compared it directly to my other players and probably won't bother with that but I connected it to my 42" 1080p LCD to test it out. My initial impression is I still like my Silicon Optix, Anchor Bay Technologies, and Mediatek players better but all of those are much more expensive. If all I wanted was DVD-V, this player is really cool. I did not observe the ringing, halo, or video noise others have reported with the edge enhancement.

It will be interesting to see if Toshiba can get this technology in a $70 player profitably and if so, it might do alright but DVD players for an HDTV without Blu-ray are going to be a tough sell very soon in my opinion so the cheaper the better. The next model from Toshiba will have to be really cheap.

Why not have both? A Blue Ray for HD DVDs and an upscaler for SD DVDs. If you do watch SD DVDs frequently, why wear out your Blue Ray watching them when you can put the wear and tear on on a less expensive machine?

I think you mean a Blu Ray for Blu Ray DVDs. For HD DVDs you would need a Toshiba HD player.

Wear out? Wear and tear?
That's not very likely to happen.
Anyway, Blu Ray players have a very good reputation for quality upscaling.

If you play DVD a lot and have the extra input and don't mind having another player around, I think a separate player for DVD is fine, especially one this inexpensive. I do not think this player is better than my Blu-ray players for standard DVD but at $57 it was a lot less expensive and it is good. If I had to have the best picture quality, I wouldn't be using DVD period, just Blu-ray and HD DVD. I don't think Blu-ray players will wear out quickly even if used for DVD a lot but there can be no denying that lighter use equals longer life, motors and laser assemblies don't last forever.

I think he was referring to wear on the Blu-Ray players, not the discs themselves .

And although my PS3 does a nice job upscaling, it is not as good at it as my HD DVD players are (especially the XA2).

I do hear the Panasonic 2.0 players (BD35 and BD55) are very good also at upscaling, better then the PS3 is.

Right, the player.

They don't wear out from anything like "normal use".
I mean, if you're gonna watch DVDs 24/7 . . . but really, maybe a DVD every day or so at most.
Nope, ain't gonna "wear out".
